OnePlus One received OxygenOS based on Android 5.0.2 last month after many shortcomings on its way. Recently CM12S update got certified and the rollouts are going on all over the world every day. CM12S is also a Android 5.0 based ROM. After all this hiatus there are still no news about the Android 5.1 update. So if you want a taste of Google’s latest offering than you might as well opt for custom ROMs which are made by the development community of users. BlissPop ROM was released few days back and this ROM is based on the Android 5.1 and brings in many features along with it.

BlissPop ROM is based on CM and some of its parts also come from other ROMs, and is one of the most highly customizable ROMs that you can install on your OnePlus One. The ROM is based on Android 5.1 with some features added in. Being a community of developers this ROM provides you stock UI experience along with set of added customization which aren’t available in the stock UI. It does give an edge over the stock which is amazing in itself.

What about official update release?

OnePlus One device is getting updates by two mediums. One is CyanogenMod and other being its own development team which released OxygenOS last month after many delays. Also Android 5.0 update via CM12S just came out, while there is no news about the 5.1 update. Expect the 5.2 update to hit public in June.

Benefits and drawbacks of the unofficial update

OnePlus One device is on the same path as Nexus devices i.e. developer devices. The custom ROM provides unadulterated stock UI with additional set of features and cool customization. Personalization options include CM12 Theme Engine, Status Bar, Notification Drawer and so on many other features. There are many other settings throughout the ROM. You’ll be getting regular updates on the upcoming features available. Take some time to familiarize yourself with it.

You have to go through the tiring process of unlocking the bootloader first, which allows you to install custom recovery (twrp, cwm etc.), which is required to flash a custom ROM ROM in this scenario. It’s an amazing learning curve which will benefit you until you have an Android phone with you.

Removing the unofficial update?

You just need to install official firmware back, which will remove your custom recovery and ROMs along. Though, you’re not likely to get your warranty back.

Note: You know, because this ROM is not an official  Android 5.1 update for OnePlus One, there are chances you could find few kinks at some of its corners. Any major bugs will be reported below.

Instructions

Warning: Warranty may be void of your device if you follow the procedures given on this page. You only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Important Note: Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

  1. Download and transfer the ROM file and Gapps file to your device’s internal storage and remember the location where you save them.
  2. You need a custom recovery to be able to flash a custom ROM. Check out this page and use the toolkit provided there to get that. You’ll need to unlock bootloader first.
  3. Boot into recovery mode.
  4. Make a backup. Once in recovery, take a backup of your current ROM.
  5. Wipe your device. Once the backup is finished, do this: select Wipe, then Advanced wipe, then select Dalvik cache, System, Data and Cache. Then do the ‘Swipe to wipe’ at bottom.
  6. Install ROM now. Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and select Install. Navigate to the file where you saved your ROM’s zip file, select it and “Swipe to Confirm Flash” on the bottom of the screen. Now wait until the flashing process finishes.
  7. Now flash the Gapps package the same way you flashed ROM.
  8. Go to back to recovery’s Main menu, select Reboot System Now. First boot may take up to 10 mins.

Your device will now reboot with Android 5.1 update!

In case you need any help over this, let us know. And, you can thank the developer for creating the ROM.
