Update 3 (Jan 1st, 2017): OnePlus has released the official stable Android Nougat update for its OnePlus 3 and 3T sets, coming in as OxygenOS 4.0. It remains to be seen now when the OnePlus 2 gets its own Nougat update, but we hope it’s not later than mid-February, and possibly January-end. Download the OTA and Full ROM zip file here at our OnePlus 3 firmware page, and OnePlus 3T firmware page.

Update (Nov 16th, 2016): Brian Yoon, software head at OnePlus has confirmed that OnePlus 3 will be getting Android 7.0 Nougat beta community” build later this month. And previous devices like OnePlus 2 will also get the update officially later this year or early in 2017.

OnePlus devices have been flagship killers for three years now. And it never disappointed us on hardware or software front. However, when it comes to releasing Android software updates, OnePlus has been slow, very slow in fact.

Being the first device to run an alternate version of the world’s most famous custom ROM for Android — CyanogenMod — we expected OnePlus to leave other Android manufacturers a mile behind on the matter of release Android software updates. Damn! we were so faithful in OnePlus that we expected it to release Android updates in a week’s difference to Nexus devices (face palm).

Anyway, so if you were expecting your OnePlus One, 2, X or the latest and greatest flagship killer, the OnePlus 3, to get Android Nougat update real quick (because c’mon, it eats premium devices for less money), then now you’d be disappointed to know that OnePlus has had a very bad record of pushing out Android updates.

Yes, unfortunately, OnePlus is no different to other manufacturers for releasing Android updates. We saw OnePlus One receiving its first major Android update (at-least) 3 months after Google launched it for Nexuses, that time we thought (as a faithful user) that it’s understandable. OnePlus was going through a divorce with its software partner Cynogen Inc. so (of-course) the then little OnePlus company will need time to get its software update ready. We understood that and never complained. But then OnePlus 2 faced the same ill fate when it was its time to get a Android software update.

So, going by the history of OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 Android update delays, we could guess the Android Nougat update will be delayed for OnePlus 3 and (even further delayed) for OnePlus 2 and OnePlus One.

Let’s drill down on the possibilities of when OnePlus devices could get their share Android Nougat 7.0 update.

OnePlus One Nougat update: Expected release date

There is no first device from an OEM that received as much love and hype as OnePlus One from OnePlus. Sadly enough though, the hardware of OnePlus One is not compatible with the Android Nougat — besides the fact that it’s quite old to still be kept in update plans — so it won’t be receiving official Nougat update.

Sure, you still have CM14 — now called Lineage OS — to have a taste of Android 7.0 Nougat update, and even though that’s’s unofficial, it’s still very, very cool to have.

Expected OnePlus One Nougat update release date: Never.

OnePlus 2 Nougat update: expected release date

Update [January 03, 2017]: The OnePlus team has pushed out the software update OxygenOS 4.0, based on Android 7.0 Nougat, for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T now. So, the OnePlus 2 is the next to receive the OxygenOS 4.0 and Nougat, and the team has acknowledged that it’s working on that now.

Which is why we expect the OnePlus 2 Android 7.0 build to arrive as an open beta pretty soon, most probably in January 2017 itself, fllowed by a stable Nougat release for the OP2 in February 2017.

OnePlus X Nougat update: expected release date

Uh-oh, our OnePlus X is a powerful device, but its processor is not compatible with the Nougat update. Which is why it would have to make do with Lineage OS, a custom ROM that runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and is available for many devices. It’s an unofficial update that should make it way to OnePlus X pretty soon too.

Keep an eye on our Lineage OS downloads page to keep yourself abreast of all developments on the LOS, which was formerly known as CyanogenMod ROM.

OnePlus 3 Nougat update: expected release date

The Nougat update is now available for the OnePlus 3. Hit Settings and check for an update now to see if your device is eligible for the update.

But anyway, if you just want the update right away, better download it from our OnePlus 3 firmware page, where we’ve gathered OTA and Full ROM zip files for you to download, along with a guide to install the update.

Expected OnePlus 3 Nougat update release date: Release — December 31, 2016.

OnePlus 3T Nougat update: expected release date

The latest offering from OnePlus, until OnePlus 4 drops by (August release is rumored, BTW!), the OnePlus 3T Nougat update is out now too, as promised in December 2016 itself.

We also have the Android 7.0 update for OnePlus 3T available for download, both as full ROM and OTA zip files, which can be found at out OnePlus 3T firmware page here.

Android Nougat

That said, there’s another point-of-view that many users in the Android community shares. It’s being believed that Android Manufacturer might roll out Android Nougat update quicker this year, as the developer preview for Android Nougat has been out for more than four months already and there are still a couple of months to go for the official release of Android 7.0.

So, Android manufacturers have had plenty of time to prepare/develop Android Nougat 7.0 update for their supported devices. If that goes true, you might get Android Nougat update for your OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 2 within a month of the official release of the update by Google.

Let’s hope for the best.
