Nexus 6P Root and Marshmallow

Update (28th Oct, 2015): Nexus 6P root is now available, thanks to Chainfire’s modified boot image which allows root while running SELinux in enforcing. Check out the link below for rooting instructions:

Android 6.0 Marshmallow launch is around the corner. Google has already sent out invites for the September 29th event, where the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be officially announced.

Nexus 6P (along with Nexus 5X) will be the first Android device to run on Android 6.0. And while this is all good news — a new Android update with new features — but know that rooting Android 6.0 won’t be a piece of cake.

To root Nexus 6P, you’ll need a custom kernel with root baked-in and SELinux set to permissive mode instead of the default enforcing mode.

We know this because our usual SuperSU zip flash from custom recovery doesn’t work for Android M developer preview releases. And the only rooting method so far for Android M preview builds is installing a custom kernel.

So if you thought you’d root Nexus 6P as soon as TWRP recovery will be available for the device, then you’d be wronged. A custom kernel will be required and that may take a few days to surface.

That said, don’t think that root will be a trouble on Nexus 6P. Nope. As soon as source code will be released, developers will fire up a custom kernel with root for the device.

We’ll update this page once Nexus 6P and Android 6.0 Marshmallow are officially announced, and when there’s any update on the Nexus 6P root status on xda or anywhere else on the web.

Stay tuned..
