When launching the Moto G6 series, Motorola made it known that these three won’t be regulars when it comes to monthly security updates. At the time, the company noted that updates will be pushed after 60 to 90 days.
As of this writing, the trio of Moto G6 phones is receiving a new software update that tags along a new Android security patch for January 2019. The update, according to the brief release notes published by the company, also improves support for Android Messages.
While Motorola might have published the update’s release notes, it doesn’t signal the immediate availability of the update for all units. Being an OTA update, by design, it will take a few days before the download notification arrives on your phone.
As already noted, it shouldn’t surprise that your Moto G6 or Moto G6 Play last received a software update months ago. This is exactly what Motorola promised back in 2018.
The Moto G6 Plus recently made the switch to Android 9 Pie with December 2018 security patches and while the update has yet to reach all markets, we believe the new Jan 2019 patch for this device is based on Pie.
The Moto G6 and G6 Play are also expected to upgrade to Android 9 Pie somewhere this Q1 or in Q2 2019.
