After the Moto X Pure Edition (Moto X Style) from 2015, it’s only last year that Motorola released a new device in the Moto X series. Dubbed the Moto X4, the phone has received some impressive reviews across the smartphone industry, leave alone for the facts that it’s part of Android One and Google’s Project Fi.

If reports are to be believed, 2018 will get another handset in the series and it’ll be called the Moto X5. We don’t know if the phone will still get an Android One variant on Project Fi, but it’s possible this will be the case. That’s not the only Moto mid-range handset we care a lot about already, as we also have the Moto G6 and G6 Plus, and a G6 Play coming our way soon, the rumor mill already starting to throw some tidbits.

As for the design, specs, features, price and expected release date, we have some details you’ll find interesting. Read on!

Moto X5 design and display

Lenovo wants to conquer the midrange market, at least if the latest leaks are anything to go by. The Moto X5 seems to be Lenovorola’s answer to the Apple iPhone X. It features the new 18:9 design, meaning you get a massive 5.9-inch display screen with a full HD+ resolution, but hopefully on a body size of the X4. Interestingly, there’s a notch at the top of the screen that houses two selfie cameras and a small earpiece, which is where the iPhone X comes in.

From the leaked image, the phone does look impressive with the screen nicely curved around the corners and doing a great job to remove the side bezels in what the company calls a borderless design. Unlike the Moto X4, there’s no front-mounted fingerprint scanner. In its place is a “motorola” text on the tiny bottom bezel, meaning you don’t get the “moto” text on the top bezel. As for the back, the Moto X5 will come with a 3D glass material on which a dual-lens camera will rest alongside the company’s trademark logo, but with no dimple.

Moto G6, Moto X5, Moto Z3

With the fingerprint scanner missing on the front panel, one would think it will be the on back. But from the leaked images, it seems Lenovorola may pull another iPhone X and debut the Moto X5 with facial recognition. Still, you are welcome to think that the X5 may come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Moto X5 specs and features

Although we already have a rough idea of what the Moto X5 will look like, we are still in the dark when it comes to specs and features. In the leaked material, though, there were some hard-to-deduce terms such as “Moto XP’s”, “Moto’s Smart Ai” and “Unlimited Premium”. Whether these have anything to do with the specs and features the phone will come with is still unknown, but we can guarantee that it will be an upgrade over the Moto X4.

Released in October 2017, the Moto X4 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor paired with either 3GB RAM and 32GB storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Since there’s a new Snapdragon 636 on the market, this is the least we can expect to see on the Moto X5. There’s a dual camera on the back that we’ve seen will be retained, but we can’t tell whether the same 12MP+8MP combination will also be retained. As for the front, the X4 has a 16MP sensor, which will either be replaced with another sensor or will simply be retained alongside a second sensor.

Moto X4 Oreo update

The Moto X5 is also expected to retain features such as USB-C, fast charging and possibly the 3.5mm audio jack. In terms of software, you can expect Android Oreo out of the box, but we still don’t know if there will be an Android One variant for Google Project Fi users. Given Motorola swift Oreo rollout, they should be updating the Moto X5 to Android P too sonner than later compared to other devices in the mix.

Moto X5 price and release date

While it might seem a little too early to be talking about the Moto X4 successor, a phone that only came out in Q4 2017, we have nothing to do with the rules. It’s unusual for such detailed material of a phone that is not expected until Q4 2018 to leak at this point in time. The only viable explanation for this unusual scenario is that the Moto X5 could see an early launch.

We cannot give you any release date, but it shouldn’t be long before clearer details show up. If anything, this is not different as far as the price goes. However, given the rumored design changes and expected specs bump coupled with the ever-increasing prices of smartphones, don’t be surprised if the Moto X5 comes at a slightly higher price tag than the $400 you paid for the Moto X4.
