How to upgrade sidearms with the Obsidian Lathe

Finding the Lathe is only the first half of the process. Once you have it, return to Marrow’s Keep and make your way to the forge area.

The Tarforge is the game’s relevant upgrade location for sidearms. Current Mortal Shell II equipment information specifically identifies the Obsidian Lathe as the item used for sidearm enhancement, while the Foundry Stone handles material smelting.

The upgrade system is particularly useful if you rely heavily on ranged attacks. The Forgotten Crossbow, for example, is classified as a ranged sidearm and has its own aim, draw, reload and shot mechanics. Other sidearms fill different roles, so improving the weapon that best matches your build can make the investment more worthwhile.

Why the Obsidian Lathe matters for ranged builds

Sidearms give Mortal Shell II’s combat system another way to approach encounters. The official game description highlights sidearms and extensive upgrade options as part of the combat system, so upgrading them isn’t merely a cosmetic progression feature.

For a ranged-focused setup, getting an early upgrade can be especially useful against enemies that are dangerous to approach directly. A weapon such as the Forgotten Crossbow gives you a way to aim, draw and fire from a safer distance, while heavier sidearms can provide different forms of ranged pressure.

At the same time, you don’t necessarily need to rush straight for the Lathe if your current weapon already handles the enemies in your path comfortably. The better approach is to pick it up when you’re naturally exploring Widow’s Overlook, especially because the chest also contains the Parasitic Stone.

The Obsidian Lathe is one of the useful early items to pick up if you want stronger sidearms in Mortal Shell II. Travel through Widow’s Overlook, descend into Martyr’s Tomb, activate the mechanism near the glowing branch-like structure, and open the chest to claim the Lathe and Parasitic Stone.
