LG denied “IOT @ HOME” Patent by a court in Korea

LG U Plus, a LG owned cellular network in Korea was recently denied patent for IoT @ HOME by a patent court in Korea. Previously, a similar patent was denied to another carrier KT who filed for a to patent GIGA IoT brand.

The court’s decision to deny the patent to LG U Plus came on the grounds of improper use of proper nouns by referring to specific objects without putting in special effort or thoughtfulness on LG’s part.

I can not see it as an exclusive brand because I can sense the meaning without special effort or deliberation.

Court’s ruling is such that a company cannot patent a brand such as IoT @ Home which includes a proper noun without putting in special effort to make it synonymous to their work. Registering proper nouns as trademark/brand names would simply give a company monopoly-tic advantage in the market without much effort.

LG U Plus representative have the following to say in the matter, “It’s a brand that changed into our idea, but it’s unfortunate that it’s unacceptable”.
