How to Install TWRP and Root Moto Z (griffin) using SuperSU or Magisk

While it’s taking Motorola some time to release Moto Z to every region it was supposed to launch in, it seems like folks over at TeamWin took it pretty quick comparatively to release the official builds of TWRP recovery for the Moto Z.

For the unknown, TWRP recovery is a custom recovery for Android devices that let’s you do full nandroid backup/restore of a device. And if you’re into custom stuffs like ROMs, MODs, etc., TWRP let’s you flash/install unsigned zips as well.

Also, getting root on Moto Z is a piece of cake now with the release of official TWRP recovery build for the device. All you need to do to root Moto Z is install TWRP recovery and then flash/install SuperSU zip from the recovery. Or if you’d like to play Pokemon Go and use Android Pay while rooted, then get root via Magisk systemless interface instead of SuperSU and you’ll be able to bypass safetynet check, thanks to Magisk’s ability to disable root on-the-fly when needed.
