iOS 15 has been one of the biggest updates to Apple’s mobile OS in the past few years. The new version brings along numerous new features including Shareplay, Focus modes, and more. Apple seems to be testing another new feature for sports fans where you can now view Play by Play stats for an ongoing game.

These easy-to-read snippets can help you get up to speed on the latest happenings of a game so you can jump right in with updated information about the match. Here’s all you need to know about this new feature.

What is Play by Play in iOS 15?

Play by Play is a new feature in iOS 15 where you get a moment-by-moment update for a sports event in text format below the game. This can help you keep track of major happenings in the game. This feature can also be used to start watching ongoing events by catching up on the latest happenings by looking at the Play by Play updates. This feature can also be used to track scores in real-time allowing you to keep up with the game while engaged elsewhere.

How to view Play by Play stats

You can easily view the Play-by-Play stats for a live game using the guide below. Keep in mind that the feature is still in its early stages so you can encounter a few bugs here and there.

Requirements

You will need the following to access Play by Play updates on your iOS device.

  • iOS 15.2 beta Release Candidate (RC) build or higher
  • Apple TV app

Guide

You can easily Play by Play updates for any game by simply visiting its listing in the Apple TV app. Open the Apple TV app and navigate to an ongoing NBA game. Tap and open the listing to view Play by Play updates for it right on your screen.

You can now choose to watch the game or simply close the app and open it later for another update.

Note: Play by Play currently only supports NBA games. Support for more events and leagues is expected in the coming months.

FAQs

As this is a fairly new feature, here are a few commonly asked questions to help you get up to speed about it.

When will this feature get a stable release?

This seems to be a fairly new feature developed using the SportsKit framework that was recently in news. It is surprising to see this new feature in the RC build for 15.2 but it is quite unlikely to be included in the final release. However, the testing of this feature seems to indicate that it should be included in the next upcoming feature update to iOS post 15.2.

Why can’t I view stats for other events?

Sadly, Play by Play currently only supports NBA games. As this feature is readied for a stable release in the coming months, we can expect Apple to add support for more games, events, and leagues.

How accurate is Play by Play?

For now, Play by Play is quite accurate for a text-by-text basis update to an ongoing game. You get all the details in a neat card-sized format with a second or two’s delay which is acceptable when it comes to text-based event updates.

Do I need to subscribe to Apple TV to view Play by Play?
