Android Q update
- Google Pixel 3a XL is eligible for Android Q update
- Official Q beta testing (OTA) begins in June
- But you can manually flash the system image right now
The Google Pixel 3a XL was expected to be eligible for Android Q beta testing once available for purchase. However, things changed, with Google revealing that eligibility will begin in June 2019.
If you can’t wait until June, though, the system image for Android Q beta is live on Google’s download page and can be flashed right away. But be warned this method will mean you won’t receive future Android Q OTA updates, instead, you’ll have to keep flashing the images manually.
Also, for now, you get to deal with March 2019 security update based on Android 9 Pie, meaning next month’s update should combine May and June patches into a single update.
How to install Android Q manually

Eligible for Android R and Android S too
- Android version and monthly security updates guaranteed until May 2022
- Android R and Android S updates are expected
Google extended the software support window for its devices from two to three years. This means the Pixel 3a XL will receive regular software updates and Android OS updates until May 2022.
During this window, the device will switch from the current Android 9 Pie to the upcoming Android Q, Android R and later Android S, the latter expected in 2021. As for security updates, May 2022 will be the end of the road.
This should make the Pixel 3a XL, alongside the standard Pixel 3a, the midrange device with the longest software support window.
