What to know

  • Google Photos is adding music controls and an asynchronous update flow for edited Recap videos.
  • A new regeneration screen tells you that the update may take a minute and that Google Photos will notify you when it is ready.
  • We found the updated status copy and full-video accessibility label in Google Photos 7.99.0.1007655401.

Google Photos already offers Recap customization, including controls for sharing and editing the finished memory video. The broader ability to customize Recap photos and music is also public, but this build reveals a more specific change to what happens after you make an edit.

We diffed Google Photos 7.99.0.1007655401 and found an asynchronous regeneration flow built around an “Updating your Recap” state. The update also introduces a dedicated music flag and messaging that promises a notification when the edited video is ready.

About APK teardowns — An APK teardown works by reading the not-yet-shipped code inside a beta build, which lets us preview features a developer is working on before they’re announced. But work-in-progress code can change, stay hidden behind a server-side flag, or be scrapped before it ever reaches your phone.

Edited Recap videos get a clear updating state

The Recap feature has appeared in Google Photos code since June 18, 2026. Its earlier strings cover sharing a Recap, viewing the full memory video, editing it, and handing an edit over to CapCut.

This update fills in what happens while Google Photos regenerates the video. The app now has a title warning that updating a Recap might take a minute, followed by a direct promise to notify the user when the result is ready. A matching accessibility description identifies the full memory video as “updating,” so the in-progress state is also communicated outside the visible status message.

The relevant additions read:

photos_stories_souvenir_full_video_regenerating_content_description = "Full memory video, updating"
photos_stories_souvenir_regenerating_title = "Updating your Recap might take a minute."
photos_stories_souvenir_regenerating_subtitle = "We’ll notify you when it’s ready!"

Together, these strings describe a background workflow rather than an edit that must finish while you remain on the same screen.

Recap music now has a dedicated flag

The same update adds a flag named is_recap_music_enabled. That gives Google Photos a specific switch for the music portion of the Recap experience instead of treating every customization control as one indivisible feature.

is_recap_music_enabled = "is_recap_music_enabled"

The flag does not reveal which music choices will be offered or how they will be presented. What the code does establish is a quieter but useful refinement: Recap music can be controlled separately, while edited videos gain a defined regeneration state and a completion alert that lets you move on instead of waiting for the update to finish.
