Google Messages’ broader in-app backup-and-restore capability is already public. What is new here is a post-setup choice for people who still have messages and settings waiting to be restored: update Google Messages to recover that remaining data, or delete the backup.
Now, a teardown of Google Messages messages.android_20260924_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic shows the wording for a final-day warning and the new deletion control. The code makes the consequence unusually clear, telling the user that an unrestored backup will be permanently deleted after that day.
Google Messages warns when restoration reaches its final day
The post-setup flow includes a reminder titled “Update today to restore messages.” Its accompanying text tells the user to install the latest version of Google Messages to restore the messages and settings that remain in the backup.
The same warning states that unrestored backups will be permanently deleted after today. That gives the prompt a firm deadline and explains exactly what is at stake if the remaining data is not restored.
The more notable addition is a “Delete backup” button in this restoration prompt. It provides a direct alternative to updating Google Messages and restoring the remaining data.
A separate toast string reads “Deleting remaining backup…,” showing that the app has dedicated feedback for the deletion action once it begins. Together, the button and toast point to a deliberate control for discarding what remains rather than leaving the backup to expire.
This post-setup deletion option is not available to users yet. We’ll watch future Google Messages builds for its rollout.
