Google Introduces ‘Gems’ – Custom AI Chatbots for Gemini Subscribers

What to know

  • Google introduces Gems, allowing Gemini subscribers to create custom AI chatbots.
  • Users can design chatbots with unique personalities and expertise for various tasks.
  • Premade Gems are available for those who prefer ready-to-use options

Gemini users can now create their own custom chatbots. Also called Gems, these allow users to craft their own AI assistants tailored to specific needs and interests.

Gem creation is available exclusively to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise subscribers. Whether you need a fitness buddy, a coding companion, or a creative writing muse, Gems are here to assist.

Creating a Gem is a breeze. Users simply provide instructions, give their chatbot a name, and voila – a personalized AI assistant is born. Want a chatbot that’s an expert on gardening with a quirky sense of humor? Just spell it out in the instructions, and your Gem will take on that persona. You can even ‘Preview’ your custom chatbot as you experiment with its instructions.

These AI sidekicks are designed to remember detailed instructions, making them perfect for tackling repetitive or complex tasks. Imagine having a virtual sous chef that knows your dietary preferences or a study partner that understands your learning style.

For those who prefer a ready-made solution, Google offers a selection of premade Gems. These include a learning coach to simplify complex topics, a brainstorming buddy for fresh ideas, and a career guide to help chart professional growth.

The Gems feature is rolling out to users in over 150 countries and supports multiple languages. It’s available on both desktop and mobile platforms, ensuring users can access their custom chatbots wherever they go.

Although gems are currently a premium feature, as the technology develops, we may see a broader release to free Gemini users too.

Google’s introduction of Gems showcases the company’s commitment to innovation in the AI space. But it’s also a way to stay on par with OpenAI that released its own custom GPTs some time back.
