Galaxy S10 and S10+ to feature in-display fingerprint sensor, side-mounted for Galaxy S10 SE

Samsung Galaxy S9

Late last month, reports surfaced from South Korea claiming that Samsung has three variants of the Galaxy S10 in the works. Of course, two of these, the standard and the Plus variant, are what we expected, but it appears there’s a third that will slide in below the standard S10, offering a blend of premium and midrange features, whose tentative name is the Galaxy S10 SE (Special Edition?).

Now, fresh reports are once again coming from Korea’s The Bell and they all but add more weight to previous rumors. According to the publication, the two top variants in the Galaxy S10 lineup will ship with an in-display fingerprint scanner. You might remember that this was expected first on the Galaxy Note 8 and later on the Galaxy S9, but none came with it. At least we know it won’t be showing up on the Galaxy Note 9. Here’s to hoping the Galaxy S10 and S10+ will be the pioneers.

The Bell says that the entry-level Galaxy S10 SE, which has codename Beyond 0, will have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which makes for an interesting choice. Even so, Samsung won’t be the first to use this kind of technology. Sony has been using it for a while and after moving to rear-mounted scanners, Motorola has recently taken over the mantle with the Moto Z3 Play. As is, Samsung will be joining the party in early 2019.

Perhaps the reason Samsung is working on a Galaxy S10 SE is the expected hike in prices of the Galaxy S10 and S10+. Apparently, the in-display fingerprint scanning module costs $15, which is way costlier than the $2 the standard scanner costs. This high cost of production will obviously reflect in the price of the end product, which we won’t be surprised if it hits the $1000 mark.

It’s worth noting that we have quite a long way to go before the Galaxy S10 family comes to life. With this in mind, don’t be surprised if more changes come in with respect to the design, specs, and features of the 10th-gen Galaxy S flagship smartphone.
