The friendly Grunt Easter egg is in Mission 3, Truth and Reconciliation, inside one of the prison cells in the brig where you search for Captain Keyes.
You’ll find this Easter egg during the prisoner containment sequence on the Covenant ship. This is the friendly Grunt in Truth and Reconciliation, not the Thirsty Grunt hidden later on The Maw.
Friendly Grunt location in Truth and Reconciliation

The friendly Grunt appears in Mission 3: Truth and Reconciliation, after you reach the part of the level where Cortana identifies the ship’s prisoner containment area. Keep pushing through the brig while looking for Captain Keyes.
How to find and free the Friendly Grunt in Halo Campaign Evolved
Reach the prisoner containment area

Progress through Truth and Reconciliation until Cortana identifies the Covenant ship’s prisoner containment area.
Enter the brig

Continue until the holding cells are in front of you and the search for Captain Keyes is active.
Check the prison cells

Look inside the cells in the brig for the Grunt who is not attacking you.
Open the locked cell

Interact with the cell door to release the friendly Grunt.
Let him regroup with the Marines

After the door opens, give him room to move out and join the friendly side.
Search every nearby holding cell before moving on with Keyes, because the Easter egg is tied to the brig area rather than a marked objective.
What the friendly Grunt does after release
After you free him, the Grunt does not attack you and does not simply flee the area. He behaves as an ally and can fight alongside the Marines and the player after leaving the cell.
KEY!That ally behavior is what makes the moment stand out. Grunts are normally Covenant enemies, so finding one imprisoned in the brig and then having him help your side turns the rescue into a small Easter egg rather than a normal encounter.
Friendly Grunt versus Thirsty Grunt
| Grunt | Location | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly Grunt | Mission 3, Truth and Reconciliation, in the brig prison cells | You free him from a locked cell and he joins the friendly side. |
| Thirsty Grunt | The Maw, during the Warthog escape after Foehammer is not able to pick you up | You find him in a side passage and hear food/thirst dialogue tied to an achievement. |
These are two separate Grunt secrets, and mixing them up can send you to the wrong mission. The friendly Grunt is part of the Truth and Reconciliation brig sequence, while the Thirsty Grunt is found during the The Maw Warthog escape.
Settings and Remix Campaign behavior

There is no known difficulty, skull, or prerequisite requirement attached to freeing the friendly Grunt. The route is simply to reach the brig during the Keyes rescue and check the cells.
One caveat: in Remix Campaign, this spawn may be random. If you are playing that mode, treat the brig as the search area instead of relying on one fixed cell every run.
