Elden Ring’s Tarnished Edition adds seven new weapons, four armor sets, two new starting classes and three Torrent skins — and an existing character can buy or loot nearly all of it early, without starting a new save.
The Tarnished Edition content (Patch 1.17) drops a full spread of new gear into the Lands Between, and the best part is that you don’t have to roll a fresh save to grab it. Two of the new sets belong to new starting classes, two more come off world invaders, and the rest are simple merchant buys or corpse pickups you can reach far earlier than you’d expect. Below is the master list, then a route to each item on its own.

Two new classes: Heavy Knight and Idus Knight
| Stat | Heavy Knight | Idus Knight |
|---|---|---|
| Starting classes | 10 | 7 |
| Vigor | 14 | 10 |
| Mind | 8 | 12 |
| Endurance | 17 | 11 |
| Strength | 15 | 13 |
| Dexterity | 11 | 15 |
| Intelligence | 7 | 8 |
| Faith | 8 | 11 |
| Arcane | 9 | 6 |
The pack ships with two new starting classes, and they pull in opposite directions. The Heavy Knight is a tank: high Vigor, Endurance and Strength built to swing big weapons in heavy armor, and you can level purely into Vigor, Endurance and Strength for a clean physical run. The Idus Knight is the jack-of-all-trades — its highest stat is Dexterity at 15, with a notable 11 Faith, so you can lean into Dex, quality, or an early Faith buff setup without fighting the stat spread.
Key The important thing: you do not have to pick either class to get its gear. Both the weapon and the full armor set for each knight can be bought or looted on any existing save, so the classes really just decide your starting stats and level — not your access to the loot.
Idus Knight gear on an existing character
The Silver Grooved set — the Idus Knight’s armor — is a straight merchant purchase in northern Liurnia of the Lakes. Head to Bellum Church, drop down the ramp and turn right, and the Nomadic Merchant is sitting right there. All four pieces are for sale at roughly 1,000 runes each, with the chest the priciest at about 1,500.

The matching Idus Sword is close by. From the Liurnia Lake Shore grace, aim northwest and ride through the trees until you reach a large tree on an overlook. One small enemy sits near it, but the sword is on a corpse there for the taking. It’s a light greatsword requiring 10 Strength / 15 Dexterity, with D scaling in both, and it comes with the Impaling Thrust skill — the fastest way to get your hands on this fast, shield-friendly weapon class this early.
Heavy Knight gear without picking the class

The Steel set, the Heavy Knight’s heavy armor, is another easy buy — this time down in the southwest of the Weeping Peninsula at the Isolated Merchant’s Shack. Step inside from the grace and the merchant sells the full set at the same rates: about 1,000 runes per piece, roughly 1,500 for the chest.
The Hefty Scimitar — the Heavy Knight’s starting weapon and a curved greatsword with D scaling in Strength and Dexterity — is available even earlier, back in Limgrave. From the Fort Haight West grace, run essentially straight north to a Nomadic Merchant, who sells it for 2,400 runes. It carries Spinning Slash and rewards jump attacks, running attacks and charged heavies with wide, crowd-clearing sweeps.
Reverse-Bladed Sword at the Roundtable Hold
The Reverse-Bladed Sword is the simplest grab of the lot: buy it from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold for 1,000 runes. It’s a backhand blade that hands you the Shadow of the Erdtree moveset — fast spinning slashes and thrusts — dramatically earlier in a run. The catch is scaling: set to keen and fully upgraded it tops out at B Dexterity, where the true DLC backhand blade reaches S. Great early power, not a permanent replacement.
Reed Great Katana atop the Fort Faroth skull
The Reed Great Katana is the first great katana you can get in the base Lands Between rather than the Realm of Shadow, and it’s a fun pickup. Ride to Fort Faroth in eastern Caelid, then go northwest to the enormous dragon skull. On Torrent, double-jump up the ridges of the skull and slide to the top — the katana is waiting up there. It scales D in Strength and Dexterity and comes with the Overhead Stance Ash of War.

Ritual Thrusting Shield in the Caelid Colosseum

The Ritual Thrusting Shield sits on a corpse inside the Caelid Colosseum in north Caelid. There’s no grace at the colosseum itself, so the run is the hard part: take the Deep Siofra Well route up through the valley and push past the giant archers — just move quickly and don’t stop to fight. Inside, behind the giant jar, the shield is on the ground where you dismount from Torrent. It starts with D scaling in Strength and Dexterity.
Knight Leontiel invasion north of Radahn
The first of two invasion drops needs Starscourge Radahn beaten first. From his arena in Caelid, run north toward the War-Dead Catacombs; roughly partway there, Knight Leontiel invades. It’s not a punishing fight, and the reward is the whole kit — Leontiel’s Greatsword plus the full armor set (hat, armor, gloves and boots).
The greatsword is essentially a Hollow Slayer-style blade with the vertical Haligtree-knight moveset, and its skill is Muleta — a stance where you hold the cloth out and follow with a light, heavy or charged heavy. Light-into-heavy or heavy-into-heavy chain properly; the full charge deals by far the most stance damage, around four times the other options, so that’s your stagger tool. Because Muleta is an Ash of War, its damage scales with three talismans: Shard of Alexander boosts the skill outright, the Godfrey Icon enhances charged skills specifically, and Rellana’s Cameo adds a buff after you hold the same stance for one second, which you can maintain through the follow-ups. It upgrades with somber smithing stones to +10, landing at D Strength / B Dexterity — so the weapon art is locked in, but the light weight and clean Dex scaling carry it. One nice touch: the hat’s mask warps to your character’s face, and you can strip the mask off entirely at a Site of Grace via Alter Garments if you’d rather show the face under the pointed hat.
Noble Broken Mask invasion in Leyndell
The second invasion is in Leyndell, Royal Capital, and it comes with the single biggest trap in the whole pack. Take the Erdtree Sanctuary grace, head west out the main road, ride the elevator down, and as you descend the stairs you’ll meet the statue of Radagon and Marika. To reveal the Marika statue you must cast Law of Regression — an incantation that needs a hefty 37 Intelligence — standing on the message emblem placed there for exactly that. Step forward and the Noble Broken Mask invades. He grows stronger as you damage him while he’s buffed, so slip behind him to shut that down. Beating him drops the Golden Order Flail, the Broken Gold Mask and the glowing Gold Tattoo armor set.

Here’s the warning that matters most: this invasion cannot happen once the city becomes Leyndell, Ashen Capital. If your save has already advanced the story to that point, the encounter — and the flail and set with it — is gone permanently. Do this before you push the capital forward. The Golden Order Flail itself is a gimmick, but a fun one. Its skill, Causality’s Wrath, first applies a buff circle to you; press it again for a long-reaching Golden Order AoE. The trick is that the attack levels up — to two, then three — by taking instances of damage while the buff is active, and at level three the blast is far bigger and hits far harder. Since intentionally eating hits is miserable, the play is to block with a shield: a guarded hit still counts as an instance of damage, so you charge the skill safely. That makes shields the reliable way to actually use this weapon.
Three Torrent skins and how to equip them

Torrent gets three new looks, each tied to a different order. Tree Sentinel is the earliest: after beating Godrick the Grafted, head into the throne room and, instead of going left, turn right down the short passage to a chest on the left — the golden-plated regalia is inside. Carian Silver is later, out at the Three Sisters: reach Ranni’s Rise, spawn at her grace inside the tower, turn around, and open the chest that’s appeared behind the table for the blue-and-red set.
The last, Funeral Night, is out in the Altus Plateau. From the Outer Wall Battleground grace (or the comparable Hermit Merchant’s Shack), turn right and head southeast into the graveyard — mind the skeletons — and it’s on the ground at the marker, the dark cavalry look with horns poking through. The moment you own any one of the three, your Site of Grace menu updates: pick Change spectral steed appearance at the bottom of any grace to swap Torrent’s look.
Best builds for the new gear
| Build Focus | Recommended New Gear |
|---|---|
| Strength | Leontiel’s Greatsword or Hefty Scimitar behind a buffed greatshield |
| Dexterity | Idus Sword or Reed Great Katana with the lighter Silver Grooved set |
| Faith hybrid | Golden Order Flail paired with the Gold Tattoo set |
The smart move with this loot is to pick one damage direction and lean into it rather than spreading stats across everything. A Strength run wants the heavy hitters behind a buffed greatshield; a Dexterity run wants the faster blades and the lighter Idus armor for mobility; and a Faith hybrid is the natural home for the flail, since its charge mechanic leans on guarding.
That last pairing is helped by the update itself: Patch 1.17 buffed shields and guarding, which slots perfectly into the flail’s block-to-charge skill and makes a guard-heavy Faith setup genuinely viable. Just keep the ceiling in mind — the early-access reskin weapons scale worse than their real Shadow of the Erdtree counterparts, so treat all of this as strong early-game power, not your endgame loadout.
Do the Noble Broken Mask invasion in Leyndell, Royal Capital before you advance the story — the moment the city turns into Leyndell, Ashen Capital, the invasion disappears for good and the Golden Order Flail and Gold Tattoo set become impossible to get on that save.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the reskin weapons worth using if they scale worse than their Shadow of the Erdtree versions?
Yes — for what they’re for. The Reverse-Bladed Sword, Reed Great Katana and Ritual Thrusting Shield are renamed, reskinned copies of DLC weapons, and their upgraded scaling is clearly lower: the reverse blade caps at B Dexterity keen versus the DLC backhand blade’s S, and the Reed loses a little to the standard Great Katana. But the movesets are identical, so you get access to those weapon types dramatically earlier in a run. Use them to power through the early and mid game, then swap to the true DLC versions once you reach them.
Does Tarnished Edition add 7 new weapons or 8?
It depends on how you count shields. Most guides list seven — the Idus Sword, Hefty Scimitar, Reverse-Bladed Sword, Reed Great Katana, Leontiel’s Greatsword, Golden Order Flail and Ritual Thrusting Shield. Some instead reach eight by folding the Silver Grooved Shield in with the weapons rather than the armor set. The official patch notes never give a number, so the 7-versus-8 split is just a categorization difference over whether a shield counts as a weapon — the actual list of items is the same either way.
