QUICK ANSWER
You can craft early 5-star gear by buying two key materials from the Exchange Shop and farming Vein Crystals from the hidden Sunken Ruins and Ruins Beneath the Waves dungeons, then stack crit chance from Karma, armor sets, awakenings, and crit-main-stat gear to approach or display 100% crit rate.

The route is built around skipping the early material wall, not skipping the game. Buy what the Exchange Shop lets you buy, farm the hidden underwater dungeons for Vein Crystal, then use the crafted gear as the base for a crit setup.

The important nuance is crit resistance. A character screen can show a very high or even 100%+ Critical Hit Chance, but bosses can subtract from that with their own resistance, so the real target is enough crit rate to stay reliable against the enemies you are actually fighting.

Early 5-star gear and crit route

Goal Method
Craft 5-star gear early Use Modan and buy the first two required materials from the Exchange Shop.
Get Vein Crystals Farm Sunken Ruins and Ruins Beneath the Waves.
Raise crit rate quickly Ascend a matching crit Karma, then add armor, awakenings, and crit-main-stat gear.
Push past displayed 100% Keep building crit when boss crit resistance lowers your effective rate.

Your first goal is to get craftable 5-star gear online through Modan, then stop treating crit as one stat that comes only from gear. The early setup pulls crit chance from several places at once: Karma ascension, set bonuses, hero awakenings, and crafted pieces with Critical Hit Chance as the main stat.

Modan crafting and Exchange Shop materials

Material How to get it early
High-Grade Amplitude Stone Buy it from the Exchange Shop instead of waiting for the later trade dungeon gate.
Tangled Forgetfulness and Remembrance Buy it from the Exchange Shop; early transmutation through Shanoa is expensive.
Vein Crystal Farm hidden underwater bosses, or transmute mining crystals at Shanoa when you only need a small amount.

Modan, the blacksmith in town, can craft 5-star gear before you can comfortably farm every material through normal dungeon progression. The shortcut is that the Exchange Shop has no level requirement for the first two key materials, while the dungeon route for at least one of them is gated much later.

The third material, Vein Crystal, is where the hidden underwater dungeons matter. Shanoa can transmute small mining crystals into Vein Crystals, but that becomes slow once you start crafting multiple pieces or chasing better stat rolls.

How to farm Vein Crystal in Dragonsword Awakening

Both hidden dungeons are underwater routes that do not stay marked on the map, so use your own marker and bring stamina food for the deeper dive.

Karma cards are the first crit spike

Start with a Karma that matches the hero or class you are building and has a Critical Hit Chance boost in its description. For Theresia, that means using a stun-focused crit Karma such as Every rose has its thorn.

Buy duplicate copies and ascend the original Karma to max. Karma ascension is not locked behind your current Adventure Level, and max ascension gives a 30% crit rate boost.

That jump is why Karma comes before heavy gear optimization. With the base crit chance included, the setup shown moves from about 5% base crit to roughly 35% after the max-ascended crit Karma.

If you are short on currency, dismantle Karma cards you are not using and put that currency back into the matching crit card for your main damage setup.

Armor, awakenings, and crit-main-stat gear

Source / Method Crit Gain
Infiltrator Set Bonus (General-purpose armor set) 30%
Blazing Flame Set Bonus (Fire armor set, e.g., for Kalien) 15%
Hero Awakenings (Stigma Awaken Stones applied to main characters) 25%
Crafted Gear Main Stat (Forcing Critical Hit Chance via Forging Mold at Modan) 15%
Maxed Sub-stats / Additional Gear Bonuses 24%

Once Karma is handled, stack crit from passive gear bonuses and hero awakenings. Infiltrator is the general-purpose set bonus, while Blazing Flame is the fire option for heroes like Kalien who can keep burn active.

Awakenings are the other big source. Buy Stigma Awaken Stone from the Exchange Shop, use it in the character awaken tab, and focus first on the three characters you actually play.

The final stretch comes from crafted gear. When you craft at Modan, use a Forging Mold to force Critical Hit Chance as the main stat, then level the piece. Sub-stats matter much more later, so early on the main stat and set bonus do the heavy lifting.

Crit damage comes after reliable crit rate

Do not rush into crit damage gear before your crit rate is stable. Since boss crit resistance subtracts from your Critical Hit Chance, a clean character-sheet number can still perform lower in a boss fight.

Once you are at or above the crit rate you need for the enemies you are farming, shift into crit damage. Before that, your materials usually give more value through skill upgrades, especially your frequently used F and G switch skills plus Q and E skills.

Basic attacks, dodge attacks, and jump attacks are lower priority for this build path because most of your damage should come from skills and signal skill timing.

Theresia, Kalien, and Roxy synergy

Gear only pays off when your team can keep triggering its best skills. Theresia wants stun and bleed to activate her signal skills, so she pairs well with characters that feed those conditions instead of forcing her to do all the setup alone.

Kalien helps build stun and also benefits from fire-focused crit bonuses when burn is active. Roxy brings bleed, which supports Theresia’s second signal skill and also ties back into teams that want stun and bleed triggers.

For Kalien, signal skills also care about super armor break, which can be handled by any character in the party. That is the build principle to copy: pick three characters whose status effects feed each other, then let the 5-star gear and crit investment amplify those switch windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really get 5-star gear before level 50?

Yes. Modan can craft 5-star gear early because the Exchange Shop lets you buy High-Grade Amplitude Stone and Tangled Forgetfulness and Remembrance without using the later dungeon route.

Where are the two secret underwater dungeons?

Sunken Ruins is reached from the Goblin Bandits’ Cave warp route toward the coast of Meadow of Beginnings. Ruins Beneath the Waves is southeast of the Statue of Organa near Seagull Village.

Do the secret dungeons appear on the map or in the Merc Guide?

No. The hidden underwater dungeons do not appear in the Merc Guide and do not remain shown on the map even after you unlock them.

Do you need stamina food for Ruins Beneath the Waves?

Yes. Ruins Beneath the Waves is deeper underwater than the first route, so bring mount stamina food such as Egg Renew before diving.

Is 100% displayed crit rate the same as 100% effective crit rate?

No. Enemy and boss crit resistance subtracts from your Critical Hit Chance, so a displayed 100% can be lower in combat against resistant targets.

More questions
Should you build crit damage before crit rate?

No. Build crit rate first, then move into crit damage once your effective crit rate is reliable for the enemies you are fighting.
