The mechanic is the same every time: take the item to a witch, extract the abyss gear, and slot it into whatever weapon you actually use — so a clunky base weapon becomes a delivery vehicle for a great effect.

One of the best is Atal’s Orb, which adds range to a melee weapon. It’s bound in two places; the easy route is the far northwest corner of Paloon, a little above where Five Finger Mountain is marked and close to the polar bear fight. Head southwest from the Abyss Nexus point and look for a giant skeleton lying in the snow (there’s a memory to scan here too) — clenched in its teeth is the two-handed sword Darkbringer, carrying the orb. Extracted, it fires three orbs with each heavy attack and is especially good against bosses that like to fly, since it deals damage even when you can’t close the gap.

For a ranged option Cliff can wield himself, head to the Wyven Sanctum, a ruined tower in Delissia. Light the lanterns either side of the first room, sprint or glide across the corridor of sawblade traps, and pull the handle at the end to open a chamber holding the Finest Reinard cannon. It swings like a spear in melee, but block-then-heavy fires an explosive shot, making it a strong melee-and-ranged hybrid — and with five abyssal slots plus refinement it becomes seriously powerful. Leaning further into ranged, Man’s Laser Helm is at Man’s Mysterium in Delesia. You can technically walk in and grab it, but the area swarms with some of the toughest non-boss foes in the game, so either clear the camp at a high level (the hacking helm earns its keep here) or sneak down to the target building toward the southeastern end of the seventh icon. It fires an Iron Man-style targeting laser and upgrades at the Cuckoo Workshop to a far lower cooldown. One caveat that’s patch-dependent: there’s a special equipment challenge to hit five enemies with the regular laser helm before upgrading, and it’s a unique, one-only item — that challenge may have been changed in a later update, so if it’s still active, complete it before you upgrade. The cube for it sits at a crossroads in western Delesia.

Finally, an easily-missed sword waits up in the abyss. During chapter 9 a quest string takes you to the Spire of the Sun in the abyss levels above the Crimson Desert, where you fight Goyen. With him down, before moving on, take a right at the end of the arena and head up the stairs into his hideaway to pick up Fated Shadow. The Gale Shield is a defensive weapon tied to one of the game’s kill challenges. You can eventually craft it via dispatch missions, but you can grab one earlier: first head to the far west of Deinis and pick up the Abyssal Challenge Cube at the crossroads to start the challenge, then go to the red-sand Helmhole settlements just south of where the map reads Tashalp. It’s down in one of the little alcoves, flagged by the usual striped white dot. To use it, let enemies land three hits while you block — that charges enough kinetic energy to release a torrent of wind, similar to force palm but without spending spirits. Be warned, it has low durability, so you’ll need to craft more to finish the full challenge.

The Rune Walker shield works much the same way but without the durability problem, and it’s a quest reward rather than a world pickup — so don’t go hunting for it in the open. You earn it by completing the Corono Troll Alliance quest line in Hanand; if it hasn’t appeared yet, keep working the Hanand faction quests (the houses and specific groups are what counts, rather than commissions) until the Corono trolls show up in your journal. Blocking three attacks charges an abyssal pulse you can unleash, essentially a flashy shield bash.

For a more reactive option, the Witter’s Plate helm rewards messy dodging. South of the Valera fisherman’s village is a pirate cove full of shipwrecks; out by the cliffs, next to the Haze shipwreck, a fish-themed helmet sits beside a treasure trove. It summons a jet of water whenever you dodge an enemy after being hit by them — so a botched dodge still buys you a few seconds by stunning that enemy. With harder difficulties added recently it’s more useful than ever, and since you can grab it very early, it’s well worth doing.

Elemental armor sets and the reindeer cloak

Heat and cold both inflict nasty debuffs in Crimson Desert, and two hidden armor sets shut them down — but each is five separate pieces spread across nearby locations, so here’s the full breakdown so you can actually complete them.

The Frost Cursed set sits around Northern Deis and the Tor of Sorcerers, and it’s also the best thing to wear against certain very tough frost bosses. The cloak is in the Sanctum of Experation, in a hidden alcove you crouch to enter, guarded by thorns you’ll need to burn away — keep it on you, since equipping it in frosty terrain negates the basic frost debuffs. The helm is just east in the Chattering Rocks ruins, on a ground-floor chamber tucked behind foliage you also burn through. The gloves are east again, behind a waterfall just below the Stones of Time stone circle, in a cave called Luna Spirit Grotto. The boots are similarly behind a waterfall — the Well of Tragedy, just north of there. The armor itself is on the border to the Crimson Desert, in a body of water north of Deadfire Mountain: stab through a waterfall, then turning-slash a wall of gold ore (mine all the gold while you’re in there — it matters later, and it respawns after a few days). The catch is the base set isn’t upgradeable, but the Cuckoo Workshop later transforms it into the Cuckoo ice-resistant armor with higher frost resistance and more defense when upgraded — so hold onto it and don’t sell or toss it.

The Scorch Flame set solves the same problem for fire, with its pieces clustered in Northwest Deminis. The gloves are behind a waterfall leading to the Twilight Grotto. The cloak is around the corner in the same ravine at the Silent Falls hideout — beat the Grave Walker mini-boss, climb the wall to the right behind it, and cast force palm while gripping to spin into the cloak’s chamber. The boots are southeast at a very tall waterfall, the Cascade Grotto, entered from the lowest platform just above ground level. Come up the river north to Stonewell Farm, where the helmet is in a chest on the upper floor of the little tower. The armor is east of there at a large golden trading outpost — walk the wagon storage area, then crouch along a rotating wall to reach the final chest. Like the frost set, it carries only basic fire resistance and can’t be upgraded as-is, but it’s the key to crafting the Cuckoo flame-resistant armor. With both Cuckoo sets done, elemental damage stops being a worry. There’s a lightning-resistant Cuckoo set too, but it’s far more situational — and notably it isn’t hidden; you get it through the St Clan quest line up in Paloon.

One more cloak is worth a detour for its unique ability. The town of Coronzo near the Scholar Stone Institute has several mines you’ll explore for the Corono Troll Alliance quest line; while you’re there, check the tunnel to the south for a hidden bismuth barrier hiding a chest with the Reindeer cloak. Wearing it lets you approach deer without sending them scattering — a big help for the legendary-gear deer hunts, and especially for the snow-white deer you’ll want to defeat to gain as a summonable mount.

Convenience pickups for your homestead and travels

If your customizable home feels too far from the nearest Abyss Nexus to bother returning to, there are two Abyss Transporters you can find and place right outside it. The first is under Muckroode Range, just south of the main town of Hanat — look for the wooden structure on the edge of the farm (an abyss item will show on the mini-map). Drop through the trap door, destroy the bismuth wall with focused false palm, and seal the transporter inside the Cuckoo pots. Bring it to your Howling Hill home, where a teleport pad sits concealed by vines in a cluster of trees to the right — burn the vines with blinding flash and set the transporter with a jumping force pile. The second is at Karen Quarry, where you fight the Man’s Excavatron boss: jump down the big abyssal structure in the center of the pit, break another bismuth wall, and take the transporter behind it. That one goes in the northeastern corner of the main Paloon town, again under vines, giving direct access to the home at the back of the Paloon camp.

💡 pro tipStocking a ranch is normally a slog, since you can only carry one animal at a time, but you can buy most of them cheaply by befriending farming folk around Hanand. Start with Ben, your ranch manager — raising his affinity to 100 with coin purses and candles, or simply greeting him around 20 times, gets him selling baby pigs (those exact counts are rough observations, so treat them as ballpark). Max affinity with William at Bloomwood Ranch, whose lamb you save in a quest, unlocks lambs. At Muckroot Ranch south of Hanand, Brema (a man in blue, often in the cabbage patch) unlocks calves at max affinity, and just east at Capra pasture, Abano — also in blue — unlocks baby goats. You can keep ducks too; they weren’t buyable before, but with a recent update they may now be available by default — treat that one as update-dependent. Either way, drop oats and wheat in the animal feeder if you want them to grow into adults you can sell or harvest.

For getting across water, the Tidebreaker boots are behind a waterfall in Dlesia, just south of the L in Delissia — stab through and you’ll find a handful of gold ore plus a chest. They add a water-propulsion boost; swimming still isn’t a real travel method, but they can genuinely save you if you’re caught crossing water at low stamina. To skip the fishing mini-game’s reeling entirely, grab The Claw, an auto-reel rod with two routes. The legitimate one is the wandering merchant’s secret shop — a traveling vendor marked by a lantern icon, well worth visiting if you spot him. The more reliable route is a secret fishing cove around the corner from the Valera fisherman’s village (travel from the village or drop down the cliffs from the Abyss Nexus above). One of the fishermen there carries a Claw rod, but you have to make him drop it on land, and you’ve only got about two seconds before he grabs it back. Threatening him flings the rod into the water; the route that worked was to axiom-force onto the ledge above, which spooks him into lightly dropping it on land, then swoop down and grab it before the bounty triggers — it can take a few tries.

For logging, you don’t strictly need an axe (turning slash in a forest works), but the right tool matters for the final carving stage and getting finer, flawless timber. The craftable chainsaw unlocks late, so for earlier on grab the Olvald’s logging axe recipe in a hollowed-out tree called Long Branch Shade Hideout in Northern Poon — look for a door in a tree about 20 meters east of the nearest Nexus fast travel (scan the memory down there too). Some ingredients are a pain: rubber comes from the rubber tree in the southern jungle (you only need five), and ivory drops from rhinos and elephants to the north. Lastly, a pure novelty: the Herald of 6 hat in a hidden basement under a tower in eastern Dlesia. From the Vain Bridge shipwreck south of the main city, head up the hills to a tower, drop into the ruined fortress, fight some abyssal stone-worms, then light the fire outside a small chamber to open it. The hat houses a rooster that pops out every morning at 6am — pointless next to the on-screen clock, but a fun pet to wander around with.

Unlimited gold bars and high-end crafting

This is the payoff. There are a few recipes for gold bars, and the hardest by far is refining a punishing 100 gold ore into a single bar. A better one is found on the floor of the Spire of Insights: brimstone, mercury and silver. Silver is easy — there are plenty of silver mines, and jewelers sell it (pricey, but money stops mattering after this). Brimstone is harvested from Dead Fire Mountain in northern Deminis using a creative mix of healing force palm and nature’s snare, a technique you unlock from a research project at the Gorthac Iron Works. Mercury is the bottleneck — only two pools exist, one up on Dead Fire Mountain east of the brimstone area and one in northern Paloon — and being a liquid, it’s harvested by firing an ice-imbued charged shot into the pool. Take all three to a witch to refine them into gold bars; since the ore nodes replenish after a few days, you can repeat this indefinitely. Crucially, when you have bars, do not sell them to a random NPC — exchange or store them at the bank for a much larger payout, around 500 silver per bar (treat that exact figure as a rough in-game estimate). Just a handful funds every major research project and trivializes everyday costs.

Because brimstone mining is hazardous, it helps to wear a brimstone gas mask first — one sits outside a ransacked farmhouse not far south of Dead Fire Mountain, just north of the Golden Plains ruins puzzle (don’t miss the memory and treasure map there). Then the genuinely quick recipe: you can craft a gold bar with just three gold ore if you also have a golden apple, an item stolen from Dlesian hedgehogs (the exact ratio is a rough figure and may vary by version). Come to the little flower-meadow field next to Tinkerton — it’s a wildlife factory, with animals constantly emerging — and the golden apple hedgehogs are literally labeled as such. Wear a mask and steal the apples right off their backs. It’s treated as a crime in Dlesia and people will report you almost instantly, but flee within about five seconds and you’re fine to grind it. Each golden apple combined with the right gold ore is worth roughly 500 silver in bar form, and how quickly you can get rich this way is genuinely silly — bank the bars rather than selling them, as before.

Two more high-end crafting gifts are worth collecting while you’re at it. After cleansing each abyss sanctum, you can claim its sanctum core: come around to the side with the circle structure, shine blinding flash, then carefully time it on and off to hit only the blue gemstones, which releases a core from the top to seal in your Cuckoo pods. These are crucial for upgrading the frost and scorch sets, Man’s Laser Helm, and much more — so go back and collect any you skipped. And in a hidden chamber on the south side of Azerion’s temple, opened by destroying another bismuth barrier, a chest holds the Azerion gear blueprints. Read every page, both sides, to learn the full range of pieces, which you then craft at a smith — among the most powerful gear in the game. They lean on platinum, which needs the same ingredients as gold plus holy water bought from the priests at the churches of Solomon.

A red-light, green-light statue challenge

One last oddity worth knowing about: Crimson Desert hides a red-light, green-light game straight out of Squid Game. Head to the Dreadful Gorge Ruins in Northern Hanand to find a long walkway with a statue at one end and a pressure plate at the other. Stand on the plate and walk to the far end without the statue catching you moving — it turns around constantly, and if it spots you, you’re back to the start. The trap is impatience: rushing only sends you back more, so take it slow and careful and it isn’t too bad. There’s a second variant down in Delesia at Mount Bennis, with a couple more obstacles but also more places to hide from the statue.
