With Black Ops Cold War having launched about a week ago, it’s fair to assume that somewhere in the neighborhood of a few million 80’s zombies have been slain by now — which is, of course, but a mere drop in the oozing, festered ocean of zombie blood spilled by CoD players over the years.

Die Maschine, the debut Black Ops Cold War Zombies map, might be brand spanking new but it hasn’t stopped players from beginning to wonder when and where the Black Ops Cold War Zombies new map will be coming out.

And, because it’s Treyarch we’re dealing with, we’d be silly to expect a straightforward clear-cut answer.

We can typically expect, based on previous Black Ops games, somewhere around 4 Zombies maps to be released over the course of any specific entry’s life-cycle. With Die Maschine only the first for Black Ops Cold War, we can rest assured we’ll be seeing at least a few more Zombies maps– but the real question is how many, and how soon.

Right now, the leading theory regarding the first question ties right in with general expectations. About 4.

Looking at the trailer for Black Ops Cold War Zombies, keen-eyed observers, well-accustomed to Treyarch’s predilection for cryptic messaging, might have thought to smash the pause button the moment they saw an array of, well, maps on the screen. Looking closely, we’ve been able to identify three locations.

With Die Maschine out with the game, it doesn’t take an Ivy league mathematician to work out that 3 + 1 happens to be the magic number we’re looking for.

K cipher solved from CODZombies

Die Maschine is littered with so many ciphers and easter eggs still waiting to be cracked open, it’s hard to speculate just how much info remains just beyond our reach. However, thanks to the internet and its unique ability to materialize masters of obscure skills out of thin air and for silly purposes, a few of these Die Maschine ciphers have been solved with real-deal cryptology. Two, specifically, provide a few vague hints towards Russia as one of the possible maps.

Cipher from the Omega group solved (G cipher) from CODZombies

The K-Cipher and G-Cipher are both easter-eggs that, to the uninitiated, may look like nothing more than what happens when your cat walks across the keyboard. To someone schooled in cryptology, it’s an invitation to show how much smarter you are than everyone else. One such smart person, u/Richkiller, managed to crack both of them before anybody else.

Of particular interest is the K-Cipher, and a few key words therein. It describes an “incursion zone”, supposedly the largest one ever seen (suggesting the biggest Zombies map, perhaps?), in the Ural mountains and mentions that Requiem is expected to send Fireteams there.

This could be a reference to the upcoming, battle-royale-esque game mode, Fireteam, and suggest that the Ural Mountains could be the site of the new mode — but the “Incursion” term certainly carries with it the connotation of something much spookier.

In the trailer, not only is the opening street placed in Berlin, but one of the screens in front of Sam happens to also be an overview of the very same German city, suggesting to many it could be the site of one of the upcoming Black Ops Cold War Zombies maps.

Considering the fact that Die Maschine is really just an expansion of the classic Nacht Der Untoten map from back in the day, it’s entirely possible that we could see a revisit to the Kino Der Toten map from 2015’s Black Ops III and its own subsequent expansion.

During the Break on Through flashback, in which Bell relives a firefight in Vietnam, players who choose to disobey every Adler says while walking him through his account of the event will eventually find themselves moving through a nightmarish Viet Cong tunnel with a very nasty surprise waiting for them.

This coincides with the fact that one of the four screens in the trailer happens to show the Dong Hei province of Vietnam and the fact that during the pre-release leaks, one of the supposed upcoming maps, Firebase Z, was said to be set in — you guessed it — Vietnam gives you more than a few reasons to suspect that you’ll be blasting Zombie noggins in ‘Nam soon enough.
