OpenAI launched a new Codex Cloud at DevDay on September 29, 2026. You set up a reusable environment once, then hand Codex coding tasks that keep running while your computer is asleep. The same day brought a Code Review inbox in the ChatGPT desktop app, Codex Security Cloud for scanning GitHub repositories, and a refreshed Codex CLI. Codex Cloud and Codex Security Cloud are limited to certain plans, while Code Review and the refreshed CLI are on every plan.

Codex usage comes out of the same allowance as ChatGPT Work. GPT-6.1 Sol, OpenAI’s new model for complex coding and long-running work, is now in Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu; Enterprise and Edu admins have to turn it on first.
How the new Codex Cloud works
You start in ChatGPT on the web or in the desktop app. Choose Work in → Cloud, create an environment, and pick your GitHub repositories. Codex inspects them, installs the dependencies and tools, tests the setup and asks for anything it’s missing. Once you review and publish the environment, every task starts from it, and each task gets its own workspace.
Environments can hold network secrets for approved HTTPS services, environment variables and limits on which domains Codex can reach. Your team can share one setup with approved settings and permissions. When a task finishes, you review the changed files and test results, ask for follow-ups, then commit or open a pull request. From a terminal, codex cloud sends work to a configured environment and pulls the result back.
OpenAI’s Thibault Sottiaux (Tibo) wrote that once you’ve configured an environment, “it’s impossible to go back to building on your laptop”.
Code Review in the ChatGPT desktop app
Code Review is a plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app. It shows a pull request’s description, changed files, comments and checks, and an inbox sorts reviews into those assigned to you, those assigned to your team, and your own.
You can ask Codex to walk through a change or look for problems, and set review instructions that apply to every review you start. With the ChatGPT Codex connector, the required repository permissions and automatic reviews turned on, Codex can review a GitHub pull request before you open it, and its comments appear on GitHub and in Code Review. Reviewing in chat never posts comments, approves or merges anything on its own. GitHub support is generally available, and GitLab merge requests are in preview.
What Codex Security Cloud scans
Codex Security Cloud is a plugin that runs security scans of connected GitHub repositories in Codex’s cloud, so they carry on with your laptop closed. Scans need Codex cloud set up for your workspace and a compatible cloud environment. You can scan a whole repository on demand or on a schedule, or watch new commits as they arrive. Codex investigates each finding and removes duplicates. Where a finding offers Fix with Codex, it generates a proposed patch that you review before selecting Create draft pull request.
Each repository gets a generated threat model you can edit to sharpen what the scans prioritize. The plugin also gives access to models offered through Daybreak Blue without a separate Daybreak application. To scan a local repository instead, OpenAI points you to the separate Codex Security plugin.
What’s new in the Codex CLI
The CLI now lets you start and steer tasks by voice, and an agents view tracks several delegated tasks at once. Voice predates DevDay: version 0.155.0 added it as an experimental feature on September 17, and 0.156.0 turned it on by default on September 22, with F8 as the toggle. Version 0.159.0, released on DevDay, added an opt-in way to interrupt Codex mid-response with new input, a cleaner welcome screen and a batch of Windows fixes, according to the Codex changelog.
The Agents API, OpenAI’s hosted version of the Codex harness, gained computer use on DevDay: agents can now work in an OpenAI-hosted browser, with your app approving website access and handling sign-in. Tibo says it’s “the same tech powering all our cloud agents, including dots”.
