It was 26 years ago that we got our last solo Battletoads game which was the Battletoads arcade. A multidimensional shoot em up that frankly is a fond memory for many grown-ups today. While Rare, the developing company did release a trailer in 2015, the world of Battletoads had been silent since then. But thanks to Microsoft, we now have an upcoming Battletoads game that should release in fall this year if everything goes as planned. So what do we know about it so far?
What is the new Battletoads game?
The new Battletoads is a beat ’em up game with nostalgic references to past iterations. It is developed by Dlala Studios and the original developer, Rare. The reboot is set to take place in the Battletoads universe where you follow your traditional favorite characters, Rash, Pimple, and Zitz on an epic adventure through space and universe. It will feature the ability to local multiplayer as well with support for 3 players. The game will also have a throwback to the original game’s pretty difficult course, Turbo Tunnel.
Will Battletoads release for PS4 and PS5?
Sadly it seems like Battletoads will be exclusive to Xbox and PC owners. According to initial reports, the game is backed by Microsoft and will be available for the Xbox One and Steam users on PC.
Given the lack of mention for Sony’s consoles, we can safely assume that the game won’t release for the PS4 and PS5 — at least in the near future, if not at all. There is still hope though, Microsoft could be holding onto its cards for now and might release a Playstation version in the future after the initial release for Xbox and Steam users.
Note: If you do not have access to Steam, then you can also buy the game through the Microsoft Store. Though, we would recommend getting a Steam account as it will help you save files and purchases to the cloud which can come in handy when you switch systems in the future.
When will the Battletoads reboot release?
The Battletoads reboot will be releasing on the 20th August 2020 for Xbox One users, Xbox Game Pass holders, and PC users through the Microsoft Store. The game will also be available to PC users through the Xbox App for PC which is currently in beta. This can come in handy if you are an Xbox Game Pass holder who also has access to a PC.
