If you were hoping for an Android 5.1.1 update for your Zenfone 2 to arrive soon — it should have by now, btw — then here’s a setback for you. There is both good news and bad news here, though.

The little good news is that Intel just released the source code for its processors as regards Android 5.1.1. And, that’s the bad news too. Because Intel took so long, Asus only now has the requite code to work on and come up with Android 5.1.1 update for its 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Zenfone sets, including popular ones like Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 2.

That’s really something we don’t like. At all.

How much time do you think Asus will take to optimize the Android 5.1.1 code from Intel, and push out an OTA to your Zenfone 2?

To help you, here are some helping facts.

When Intel threw the Android 5.0 source code (two times, on Feb 20, and March 11), Asus was able to include it on its Zenfone 2 that was launched on April 23. But the OTA update based on that came out for Zenfone 5 only by June 2, and was not optimized at all. So poor it was that many Zenfone 5 users went back to 4.4 without batting an eye.

It’s interesting to see how Asus handles the software update fiasco from here, and time is a crucial and perhaps deciding factor here, already!
