Chromecast that was launched last year is capable of streaming music and videos. Now, Google has announced a dongle called Chromebit in collaboration with Asus. This device priced at $100 can plug into any HDMI equipped display to turn it into a PC.

The idea behind Chromebit is similar to the Intel Compute Stick that is an HDMI dongle priced at $150 with the same functionality, but it runs on Windows 8.1. Even the Chinese firms have come up with such Android HDMI dongle-computers lately. Now, it is Google’s turn to take this logical step.

The Asus Chromebit is portable, colorful and has a small swivel. It can plug into any HDMI socket without the necessity of a cable. The device is energized by Rockchip RK3288 SoC based on ARM, 2 GB of RAM and quad core Mali 760 graphics unit. There is 16 GB of solid state storage space in the dongle-computer from Google. The Chromebit supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and external USB 2.0 port to add a mouse and keyboard combination. The same can be done using Bluetooth as well.

Users can make use of the Chrome Remote Desktop app to take control of it via their smartphone. This way, the televisions can be transformed into a monitor with HDMI support without spending too much. Chromebit will provide complete access to the internet and Android applications.
