Apple Action Mode: Which iPhones Have It? Will iPhone 13, 12, 11 or Older Sets Get It?

iPhones have always been at the forefront of mobile photography and the new iPhone 14 takes that a step further with its non-pro and Pro models. The new iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max feature a larger 48MP sensor that uses exceptional image processing to produce the best pictures, a mobile device can capture.

The iPhone 14 features a smaller 12 MP sensor that is larger than the previous generation and much similar to the one used by iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Apple has also added some new in-app features that help improve your image capturing abilities and among them is the new Action Mode. Let’s find out more about it.

What is Action Mode on iPhone 14?

Action Mode is a new video mode in the default Camera app that allows you to capture stabilized videos when you’re in motion. This enables you to capture much smoother videos than previous iPhones when you’re moving the camera around which in turn makes for smoother transitions and movement in your captured footage. The Action Mode tries to offer an alternate way of capturing stabilized videos when in motion without having to carry a gimbal around with you.

Action Mode compatible iPhones

The Action Mode is a new feature exclusive to the iPhone 14 lineup due to its larger sensors and improved image processing capabilities when it comes to the Pro model. The following devices are compatible with Action Mode on iOS 16.

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14

You can toggle on Action mode by tapping its icon in the UI when capturing a video through the Camera app.

Will iPhone 13, 12, 11 or older iPhones get it?

No, that looks unlikely. The Action Mode will remain available only for iPhone 14 sets.

How does Action Mode work

Action Mode works by capturing video using your entire sensor. Ideally, iPhones use a method where part of your sensor is used to capture your current frame while part of it is used to capture additional information which can then add more detail to your final output.

However, using the entire sensor gives the iPhone more room to work with which can then be used to compensate for shakes, jerks, and more in your footage. Action mode uses more overscan and advanced roll correction in Apple’s own words to stabilize your image. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR.

FAQs

Here are a few commonly asked questions that should help you get up to speed with the latest information on Action Mode.

Will Action Mode videos be larger in size?

Action Mode videos will likely be slightly larger in size than normal videos as they’d have to contain a bit of extra information so that you can edit them appropriately if needed. However, for now, there has been no official word on the same from Apple.

What are some ideal situations for Action Mode?

Anytime you’re capturing a video while you’re in motion, be it jogging, hiking, cycling, or more, Action Mode will help you reduce the jerks and shakes introduced in your footage.
