What to know

  • Android is adding a dedicated system warning for installed app stores that are no longer registered with the operating system.
  • The dialog gives users a direct explanation when an app store loses its Android registration, alongside code for a help link.
  • We found the dormant code in framework-res from Android beta cp41.260828.005.a6 on a Pixel 7 Pro, but could not surface the dialog in the app.

Registered Android app stores are not new: Google publicly described the broader capability earlier this year. What is new in this build is Android’s handling of what happens after an installed app store loses that registration.

Our teardown of framework-res from Android beta cp41.260828.005.a6 uncovered a dedicated warning dialog and a configuration entry for an accompanying help destination. Together, they point to a clearer, user-facing way for Android to explain the change in an app store’s system status.

About APK teardowns — An APK teardown works by reading the not-yet-shipped code inside a beta build, which lets us preview features a developer is working on before they’re announced. But work-in-progress code can change, stay hidden behind a server-side flag, or be scrapped before it ever reaches your phone.

Android will explain when an app store loses registration

The clearest addition is a system message that tells the user, “This app store is no longer registered with Android.” That wording is direct: it identifies the affected software as an app store and explains that its registration with the operating system has ended.

This is a more specific development than the already-public registered-app-store capability itself. The new code covers an important edge case for users who still have an app store installed after its Android registration changes. Instead of leaving the store’s status unexplained, the operating system is preparing a dedicated dialog that can state what happened.

The same framework resources include a configuration key for a registered-app-store help URL. Its value is empty in this build, so the code does not reveal a destination. We therefore cannot say what guidance the eventual help page will provide. Its presence nevertheless shows that Android is preparing plumbing for a help link alongside the warning.

The new strings, seen below, point to the dialog and its related help resource:

config_registeredAppStoreHelpUrl = ""
ras_lost_dialog_message_generic = "This app store is no longer registered with Android."

We found these resources by examining framework-res from cp41.260828.005.a6 and could not surface the dialog on the Pixel 7 Pro running that beta. The code establishes the warning text and help configuration, but does not provide further details about when the dialog will appear.

The warning is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Android builds for signs of its rollout.
