How to cleanse the Sanctum of Penitence in Crimson Desert

Learn how to cleanse the Sanctum of Penitence in Crimson Desert by finding the single reactor core, placing it on the correct pillar, and finishing the puzzle with Aerial Force Palm.

QUICK ANSWER
To cleanse the Sanctum of Penitence you only need a single reactor core: grab the one floating piece from the ruins behind the sanctum, set it on the empty back-left pillar, then jump on it and use an Aerial Force Palm to slam it into place.

The Sanctum of Penitence is one of the ancient-machine puzzles in Crimson Desert, and despite the ruined, enemy-filled approach, the actual cleanse is short. Where some sister sanctums make you juggle several reactor blocks, this one needs a single piece slotted onto one empty pillar. The trouble is that plenty of players over-search for extra pieces and then fluff the lock-in, so here’s the whole thing from the questline gate down to the final slam.

Where to find the sanctum and what unlocks it

Detail Info
Location East of Hernand, southeast of Unicorn Cliff, near Pororin Forest (reported)
Prerequisite The Witch of Wisdom / Witches Faction questline; reportedly Chapter 5 and meeting Elowen
Reactor pieces needed One
Reward Kuku Pack blueprint (reported)
Optional reward Core of Penitence (hidden dial puzzle)

The Sanctum of Penitence sits on the east side of Hernand, southeast of Unicorn Cliff and close to Pororin Forest. Head for that stretch of map and look for the ruined sanctum structure.

You need some questline progress before the area can be cleared. The sanctum is tied to The Witch of Wisdom / the Witches Faction questline, and you need to have reached Chapter 5 and met Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, before the puzzle becomes solvable. If the machine won’t respond, the cause is that this questline isn’t active yet.

Clearing the Antumbra Order before the puzzle

An enemy-clearing phase has to happen before the machine can be used. You arrive at the sanctum to find it held by the Antumbra Order, and an enemy-control meter has to fall from 100% to 0% before the area counts as clear.

Flying enemies are the annoying part, and the quick way to deal with them is Blinding Flash — reflecting light at them to bring them down. Arrows or an Aerial Force Palm can do the job too, but they’re slower, so lead with Blinding Flash if you have it.

How to cleanse the Sanctum of Penitence in Crimson Desert

STEP 1/8

Confirm you need only one piece

This sanctum is a single-piece puzzle, so don't waste time hunting for extras — the lone core sits in the far-left corner room.

Go back toward the building behind the cleansing machine and pass through the door and the archways to reach the small room.

STEP 4/8

Seal it for the trip back

STEP 5/8

Carry it back to the machine

Return to the central machine and bring the core over to the empty back-left pillar.

STEP 6/8

Line it up over the empty pillar

Hover the core over the open pillar top and lower it gently until green, leaf-like particles appear, which means it's aligned.

STEP 7/8

Get on top of the core

Once it's seated and hovering in place, climb up and stand on the piece.

STEP 8/8

Jump and slam it with Aerial Force Palm

Jump again and drive an Aerial Force Palm straight down to lock the core in and cleanse the sanctum.

A couple of things smooth this out. The single piece is called Fusion Reactor Core 11, though don’t worry if your game labels it differently — it’s just the missing pillar piece. And if you’ve sealed it inside a Kuku Pot, remember to take it back out at the machine before placing it; people occasionally think the puzzle is bugged when really the core is still tucked away in the pot.

QUICK WIN

Wait for the green, leaf-like particles to appear on the core before you slam it. If you Aerial Force Palm too early, the piece won’t register, and dropping or placing the core without the downward slam never finishes the puzzle.

Reward for cleansing the sanctum

Cleansing the Sanctum of Penitence awards the Kuku Pack blueprint and pushes The Witch of Wisdom questline forward. The cleanse advances the Witch questline. (Note the Kuku Pack reward is a different thing from the Kuku Pot you used to carry the core.)

Optional dial puzzle and the Core of Penitence

There’s also a secret extra here, optional rather than required. After the cleanse, a dial puzzle appears. You solve it by hitting the crystal-like stones around the dial’s outer rim with Blinding Flash, working your way around for a full rotation.

The catch is the gaps between those crystals — flash a gap instead of a stone and the dial resets, so aim carefully and only light up the crystals. Complete the full rotation and it releases the Core of Penitence, which you then seal into your inventory with Axiom Force.

Other sanctums in the Witch of Wisdom chain

If you’re working through this set, the next stop is the Sanctum of Temperance — a tougher two-block machine puzzle with an armor reward (Odek’s Protector Plate Boots). Beyond those two, the Sanctum of Benediction, Absolution, Exaltation, Atonement, Deliverance, and Solace are all part of The Witch of Wisdom sanctum chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to finish a questline or reach a certain chapter first?

Yes. The sanctum is tied to The Witch of Wisdom / Witches Faction questline, and you need to be at Chapter 5 and to have met Elowen before the area can be cleared. If the machine won’t react, an inactive questline is the reason.

How many reactor pieces does the puzzle need?

Just one. This is a single-piece sanctum, which is exactly why so many players over-search — they expect the multi-block setup that other sanctums (like Temperance) use.

Where do you find the reactor core?

In the ruins behind the sanctum, in a small room in the far-left corner. Head back toward the building behind the cleansing machine, go through the door and archways, and the piece is floating right there for you to grab.

Why won’t the core lock into the pillar?

Two common reasons. First, the alignment cue: hover the core over the empty pillar and lower it until green, leaf-like particles appear — that’s the sign it’s aligned. Second, simply placing or dropping it isn’t enough. You have to stand on it and use a downward Aerial Force Palm to slam it home.

What reward do you get for cleansing it?

It gives the Kuku Pack blueprint and advances The Witch of Wisdom. The cleanse moves the Witch questline forward.

More questions
What is the optional dial puzzle and how do you get the Core of Penitence?

After cleansing, a hidden dial puzzle appears. Hit the crystal stones around the dial’s rim with Blinding Flash, avoiding the gaps (a gap hit resets the dial), and complete a full rotation to release the Core of Penitence. Seal it with Axiom Force to claim it. Consider it a bonus rather than a guaranteed step.
