Well, the day has come! Nubia has finally unveiled the Nubia Z17 officially during an event at Beijing National Aquatics Center thereby putting a halt to never-ending rumors. And, guess what? Most of the earlier rumors are indeed true.
The ZTE Nubia Z17 packs whopping 8GB of RAM which makes it the world’s second phone to do so after the Asus ZenFone AR. The smartphone packs 128GB UFS 2.1 ready onboard storage which should be plentiful.
Unsurprisingly, at the heart of the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. Of course, there will be various other aspects that come into play (such as software) but, 8GB of RAM and Snapdragon 835 chipset together should make for fluid performance be it graphic intensive gaming or day-to-day usage.
Alongside the 8GB variant, the smartphone will also be available in 6GB RAM + 128GB storage and 6GB RAM + 64GB onboard storage.
It comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with almost zero bezels on left and right sides of the phone. The top and bottom, however, do have significant bezels like other regular phones.
For the photography enthusiasts, there’s a 23MP + 12MP dual camera setup (1/2.55-inch CMOS sensor with 1.4μm pixel size and f/1.8 aperture) at the back which supports up to 2x zoom and up to 10x dynamic zoom. It comes with a full-pixel dual-core focus to accelerate the focusing speed. The company claims that the Nubia Z17’s camera will be able to focus on a given subject within 0.03s. At the front is a 16MP f/2.0 camera for selfie aficionados.

The company has added a few software chops to accompany the ZTE Nubia Z17’s powerful camera such as NeoVision 7.0 and Portrait Mode 2.0. These make use of some artificial intelligence algorithms to provide better results. The Portrait Mode 2.0 especially makes use of these AI algorithms to optimize the bokeh effect and provide good depth to the images.
On the connectivity front, it offers support for dual-band Wi-Fi ac, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth, and NFC. It also comes with Hi-Fi+ and support for Dolby Atmos audio. Do make a note that the 3.5mm headphone jack is missing.
On the software side of things, the Nubia Z17 runs Android 7.1 Nougat-based Nubia 5.0 UI. Also, there’s something called FiT 3.0 (Frame Interactive Technology) which allows you to swipe on the edges of the handset to access certain functions.
The entire package is backed by a 3,200mAh battery which supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 technology to provide faster-charging speeds. The company claims that your phone will reach up to 50% just within 25 minutes of charging.
There’s also NeoPower 3.0 battery saver mode which intelligently freezes background activity and other functions to provide more juice — addressing one major pain point of every smartphone user.
The high-end (8GB + 128GB) and the 6GB + 128GB variants come only in one color, i.e., Blue and Black Gold respectively. The 6GB + 64GB variant comes in three colors: Black, Gold, and Red.
