What to know
- YouTube Music is developing a “Download now” option that temporarily permits a download over mobile data.
- The override lets you keep your Wi-Fi-only preference instead of changing it whenever you need one download immediately.
- The feature appears in code from an unreleased YouTube Music v9.40.51 build, so its final behavior could change before release.
YouTube Music already lets users enable downloads over mobile data through a persistent setting, a capability documented in Google’s existing support material. The new development is a more convenient, one-time alternative for people who normally want downloads restricted to Wi-Fi.
Now, a teardown of YouTube Music v9.40.51 shows that the app is preparing a per-download “Download now” dialog. It warns that continuing will use mobile data while leaving the existing Wi-Fi-only preference intact.
“Download now” temporarily bypasses the Wi-Fi-only preference
We found four new strings describing the override. YouTube Music can present a “Download now” action and follow it with a confirmation dialog titled “Download over mobile data?”
The dialog message is particularly clear about what happens next. It tells the user that the current download preference remains Wi-Fi only, but proceeding with this particular download will consume mobile data. It also points to settings for anyone who wants to change the persistent preference instead.
The new strings, seen below, point to the complete confirmation flow:
The override avoids an unnecessary settings change
Mobile-data downloads themselves are not new to YouTube Music. Google already documents the broader capability, including the setting that controls whether downloads should use Wi-Fi only.
What is new in v9.40.51 is the per-download exception. Instead of requiring you to change that preference, start a download, and potentially remember to restore the preference afterward, YouTube Music is preparing a direct confirmation for the download in front of you. The wording makes the scope explicit: choosing “Download” permits mobile-data use now, while settings remain the place for a lasting preference change.
This one-time download override is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future YouTube Music builds for signs of its rollout.
