What to know
- YouTube is developing spoken alerts for camera and microphone state changes on connected smart glasses.
- Smart-glasses capabilities are already public, but these specific voice confirmations are new in this build.
- We found the code in the unreleased YouTube v21.41.525 build but could not surface the alerts in the app.
YouTube appears to be preparing a clearer way for smart-glasses users to know when their camera or microphone changes state. The app now contains short spoken confirmations for turning the camera on or off and muting or unmuting the microphone.
Now, a teardown of YouTube v21.41.525 reveals the exact phrases the app could announce through a connected pair of glasses. The same build also adds new actions for deleting a scheduled livestream and abandoning a stream.
YouTube adds spoken camera and microphone confirmations
The new strings, seen below, point to four concise voice alerts for smart glasses. “Camera is on” and “Camera is off” announce changes to the glasses’ camera, while “Mic on” and “Mic off” cover the microphone.
These alerts could give you immediate audible confirmation without requiring you to check another screen. That distinction matters for glasses, where a state change may otherwise be less obvious than it is while directly operating a phone.
Although the broader smart-glasses capability is already public, we found no retrieved source specifically describing YouTube voice alerts for camera or microphone state changes. Our five dedicated searches failed with quota errors, so that public-information check remains incomplete. What is definitive is that these four alert strings are present in YouTube v21.41.525.
The build also changes livestream exit dialogs
Alongside the glasses alerts, YouTube v21.41.525 adds two direct livestream actions. One string labels the deletion button in a scheduled-stream dialog, while the other labels the action for abandoning a stream.
The strings do not provide further details about the surrounding dialogs or how YouTube distinguishes deleting a scheduled stream from abandoning one already in progress. They establish only the two new button labels, so we cannot infer any additional workflow from them.
The smart-glasses voice alerts are not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future YouTube builds for signs of a rollout.
