Xiaomi Redmi 5 was unveiled about a year ago preinstalled with Android 7.1.2 Nougat and while it is expected to receive an update to Android Oreo, Xiaomi hasn’t given any indication that it is about to begin the official rollout.
The Redmi 5 was unveiled alongside a Plus variant and the latter, also known as Redmi Note 5 in India, has already been upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo. Although Xiaomi is still quiet on when the same update will arrive on the standard model, we have a reason to believe the OS may start rolling out in the next few weeks.
It was in late October 2017 that the first MIUI beta based on Android Nougat arrived on the Redmi 4. With October here, we are likely to see the first MIUI beta based on Android 8.1 Oreo for the Redmi 5 rolling out soon. Xiaomi is expected to roll out the stable MIUI 10 update to the Redmi 5 in mid-October and if we are right, the Oreo-based beta update should arrive soon after.

It took Xiaomi about two months to test Oreo on the Redmi 5 Plus before the stable version was released. If the Redmi 5 does get the Oreo-based MIUI 10 beta before the end of October, it’s likely to see the stable version arrive before the end of this year. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
