Xiaomi previews MIUI 9 with new themes, new lock screen, split-screen and more

Just a couple of days ahead of the official unveiling of the MIUI 9, the company has teased some of the features users are going to see with the update installed on their phones (via its MIUI forums). So, without wasting any time, let’s get started.

MIUI 9 gets three new themes (alongside the Default theme) called: No Boundary, Color Fantasy, and Cool Black. These theme names are not official yet, though. A major change one can spot in these new themes is the absence of text below the app icons in the dock. This lends the themes a neat look.

Then there’s the improved lock screen which has already been teased before. The revamped lock screen, as you can see from the image, brings a bunch of shortcuts (Torch, Mi Home, Mi Remote, Mi Pay, and Transport card) to your fingertips. These shortcuts can be accessed by swiping to the right on your lock screen.

Next, comes the multi-window split-screen mode. Xiaomi handsets which support Android 7.0 will be getting the split-screen mode with the MIUI 9. Some of the phones which have been confirmed to receive this feature include Mi6, Mi Mix, Mi Note 2, Mi Max, Mi Max 2, Mi 5, and Redmi Note 4X.

The MIUI 9 ROM has also been well optimized to keep its size in check. While many new features have been added to the new ROM, a few redundant ones have also been removed.

Apart from these, Xiaomi claims that there are a few technology breakthrough features that will be revealed on July 26th alongside the Redmi 5X.

The company reveals that, initially, only a select set of devices including Mi 6, Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm / Redmi Note 4X will receive the update first. The second batch will include other popular (recent) handsets from the company with the old smartphones getting the update last.
