It has been raining Android 5.1 updates lately on various devices at Verizon and other US carriers from a number of manufacturers. Motorola too joined the parade and launched Android 5.1 update for its Moto X 2nd Gen. and 1st Gen. and to the Droid Turbo as well.

However, the ‘root’ conscious people among us should probably wait before installing this Android 5.1 OTA update on Verizon devices. In the root status post on Verizon Droid Turbo Android 5.1 update we did yesterday, it was clearly pointed that moforoot (the only root solution for Verizon Motorola devices currently) doesn’t support Android 5.1 update yet, and there could be a possibility that it may never support it if you simply take/install the Android 5.1 OTA update.

Same is the case with Verizon Moto X 2014. If root is something you dearly care about, then we strongly recommend you to NOT install the Android 5.1 OTA update for now. Give the community a bit of time (say a couple of weeks) to know if the device is rootable or not after the update. Or if there’s any workaround for it.

Also, updating to Android 5.1 may also block you from downgrading back to Android 5.0.2, and that’s a risky option to take if Android 5.1 indeed never gets root. Be cautious out there people, the world of Verizon’s locked bootloader devices is nasty.

We’ll update this page as soon as we come to know of a working root method for the Verizon Moto X 2014 Android 5.1 update. Stay tuned..
