There was a Marshmallow system dump first, taken out from a rare Android 6.0 update to one certain T-Mobile Note 5 user, and then there was a Note 5 Marshmallow Odin Tar firmware out of that. Now, we also have the root access for Note 5 running Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. It’s been two really amazing days for Note 5 users.

The Odin flashable firmware breaks KNOX on your device, something which installing the root access also does. If you have installed Note 5 Marshmallow update already, then your warranty is already void. In this case, we don’t need to worry about warranty getting void due to root access.

The Android 6.0 firmware build we’re talking about is N920TUVU2DOK5, or OK5 in short, and if you were looking for OK5 root, you have come to right place.

Backup!

Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files. Sometimes, Odin installation may delete everything on your device!

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1. Download custom kernel, TWRP recovery, Odin software and SuperSU file from above.

Step 2. Install Galaxy Note 5 driver (method 1 there!) first of all. Double click the .exe file of drivers to begin installation. (Not required if you have already done this.)

Step 3. Extract the Odin file. You should get this file, Odin3 v3.10.6.exe (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).

Step 4. Connect the device to PC, and transfer the SuperSU file to it. Then disconnect the device from PC.

Step 5. Boot Galaxy Note 5 into download mode:

  1. Power off your Galaxy Note 5. Wait 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
  2. Press and hold the three buttons Power + Home + Volume down together until you see warning screen.
  3. Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.

Step 6. Double click on extracted file of Odin, Odin3 v3.10.6.exe, to open the Odin window, as shown below. Be careful with Odin, and do just as said to prevent problems.

Odin 3.10.6

Step 7. Connect your Galaxy Note 5 to PC now using USB cable. Odin should recognize your Galaxy Note 5. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! message appearing in the Log box in bottom left, and the first box under ID:COM will also show a no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.

Odin 3.10.6 Added message

  • You cannot proceed until Odin recognizes your device and you get the Added!! message.
  • If it doesn’t, you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with device. Mostly, drivers are the problem.
  • You can try different USB ports on your PC too, btw.

Step 8. Load the TWRP file into Odin. For this, click the AP button on Odin and the select the custom kernel file.

Step 9. Make sure Re-partition and Auto Reboot checkbox are NOT selected under the Options tab. Don’t use PIT tab either. Go back to Log tab btw, it will show the progress when you hit start button in next step.

Re-partition Remains Off

Step 10. Click the Start button on Odin now to start flashing the custom kernel on your Galaxy Note 5. You’ll get PASS message as show below upon successful installation from Odin.

Odin 3.10.6 Pass Message Appears

  • If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do this all again. Disconnect your device, close Odin, boot device into download mode again, open Odin, and then select the TWRP and flash it again as said above.
  • If you get FAIL in the top left box, then also you need to flash the firmware again as stated just above.

Step 11. Wait till installation is finished, and when it’s done, it’s time to install the TWRP recovery now. The procedure is same as above, and is mentioned a bit briefly here.

  • Your Note 5 will stay in download mode. Now, close Odin. Disconnect the device from PC.
  • Open Odin again. Connect the device to PC again.
  • Now, load the TWRP recovery file into AP slot of Odin, like you did for custom kernel.
  • → Make sure only Re-Partition option is unchecked under Options tab. Keep Auto Reboot checked this time.
  • Hit Start button to install the TWRP recovery.
  • After installation, device will restart.

Step 12. Once your Note 5 is powered on. We can proceed to install root. For that, make sure that you have SuperSU file in your device. Now, reboot into recovery mode.

  1. Power off your Galaxy Note 5. Wait 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
  2. Press and hold the three buttons Volume up + Home + Power together until you see T-Mobile logo on the screen.

Step 13. You’ll see TWRP recovery. To install root, tap on Install menu, and then select the SuperSU file (which you transferred in step 4 above). Then, do the swipe action at the bottom to confirm installation of root.

Step 14. When done, tap on Reboot System button to restart the device.

That’s it. When your Note 5 starts, it will be rooted on Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.
