Complete the first mission, interact with the Astromech in the Den, build the Droid Repair Bay, and finish another mission so Astromechs can appear at the Recruitment terminal.
Droid recruitment is tied to a Den facility rather than an Astromech joining your roster automatically. Some campaign paths also gate access behind Den Level 2 and repayment of the starting debt, so clear both if the Astromech or upgrade terminal remains unavailable.

How to recruit an Astromech from the terminal
Once the bay is running, open the Recruitment terminal. Astromechs join its rotating selection instead of appearing in every batch. C6-R-R3 and T2-Z4 are examples of recruitable candidates, with C6-R-R3 listed at 700 Credits.
Custom Astromechs follow a separate creation path. Open the Character Database from the main menu and use its Astromechs tab to create an R2-series, R3-series, or BR-1 operator, including its appearance, voice, and backstory. Load your save afterward, and the custom droid can enter the same recruitment pool.
Refresh the Recruitment terminal when neither a premade nor custom Astromech appears in the current selection; finding one can take several refreshes.
Which droids become recruitable

The facility unlock applies only to Astromech Operators. It does not turn every droid encountered during the campaign into a possible squad member.
Separatist battle droids and Droidekas cannot join as Operators. Typhon and M-3VO are also not recruitable squad members.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you field a full squad of Astromechs?
Yes. You can fill the squad with Astromechs where mission rules permit. Hawks is mandatory during story missions, however, so those missions require Hawks alongside Astromechs in the remaining slots.
What role do Astromechs perform in combat?
Astromechs are support Operators that cannot use blasters. They can carry three Utility items with additional uses, donate Action Points through their built-in Comm-Link, improve allied accuracy, repair themselves, traverse vertical surfaces, and deploy smoke to obstruct enemy sight. Their later Analytics talents expand their accuracy and defense support.
