Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime 2018: All you need to know

Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime 2018

The midrange Galaxy On series is sold in just about every market where Samsung has set camp, including the U.S. where you’ll find the Galaxy On7 trading as the Galaxy J7 Prime on T-Mobile.

As it stands, Samsung is getting ready to unveil the successor to the Galaxy On7 Prime and in fact, we already have the details about the official specs and features of the Galaxy On7 Prime 2018 as well as the official release date.

A subtle upgrade over the Galaxy On7 Prime 2017 edition

Granted, the same will also be true for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime 2018, a phone that is, in fact, expected to be unveiled this week in India. Looking at the leaked details thanks to GFXBench, the Galaxy On7 Prime 2018 is here to succeed the outgoing Galaxy On7 Prime, but it only brings subtle changes to the phone’s internal specs.

We would have loved to see a bezel-less panel on a Samsung budget phone, but it seems Samsung doesn’t see it required at the moment. Having given the Galaxy A8+ a Super AMOLED bezel-less panel, there were hopes Samsung would give the new tech to their budget-segment consumers too, just like Huawei did with the Honor 7X.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime 2018 brings the same full metal unibody design used on its predecessor. The same 5.5-inch full HD display screen will be retained alongside the Exynos 7870 octa-core chipset clocked at 1.6GHz, but this will then be paired with 3GB/4GB RAM, 32GB/64GB of internal storage that can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 256GB and a 13MP main shooter. The selfie camera also gets a similar 13MP shooter that can record up to 1080p videos, just like the main camera.

The Galaxy On7 Prime 2017 had a base storage of 16GB accompanied by another variant of 32GB storage, but the On7 Prime 2018 will get a base storage of 32GB and a high-end variant of 64GB storage, which is the variant that will feature 4GB of RAM. Also, the outgoing model has an 8MP selfie camera with f/1.9 aperture, which is the same aperture you find on both sensors used on the On7 Prime 2018.

Oreo for On7 Prime 2018 should arrive soon!

Even though the Galaxy On7 Prime is upgradable to Android Nougat, it came preinstalled with Android Marshmallow out of the box. As for the Galaxy On7 Prime 2018, you get Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and of course a promise to Samsung’s Android Oreo update at some point in future — maybe within Q2 2018. The On 7 Prime ’18 also comes with Samsung Pay Mini preinstalled. Of course, atop Nougat OS, expect to get a skinned version of Android onboard, dubbed as Samsung Experience.

The similarities between the two further continue into other specs and features, including connectivity, battery capacity (3300mAh), fingerprint scanner (front-mounted), supported SIMs (dual-SIM) and even dimensions, but we can’t tell whether the story will be the same when it comes to pricing.

Speaking of pricing, the Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime 2018 will be officially available in India on January 17, 2018, and it will be an Amazon exclusive. Unfortunately, there are no details of how much the phone will cost, but it shouldn’t be long before we find out.

As for the availability of the phone, we expect that it will follow in the footsteps of other Galaxy On series handsets and launch in other markets across the globe. We should know more about this sooner or later.

Are you planning to buy the On7 Prime 2018? Would you rather buy a Honor 7X with 4GB RAM and 6.0-inch bezel-less display, whose Oreo update too has already been announced?
