Samsung awarded new patent for rollable screen device with embedded fingerprint sensor

For what seems like ages now, rumors and leaks have been circulating that suggest Samsung is preparing to release some type of foldable mobile device. Each year, the dream fades only to be revived later with a promise of a release in the next one. A few days ago, LetsGoDigital found some patent filings from the WIPO database for Samsung that offer what might be the closest application yet of a flexible screen. It should be stated that patents do not mean products.

As can be seen in the lead picture above, the patent, which was filed on June 13, 2017 (and June 13, 2016 in Korea) depicts large squared “tube” with a fingerprint sensor centered along the bottom. The screen, which appears to be a flexible OLED can be magnetically attached to the base, or mounted on a series of plates that can unfold from the base. According to the information, pressing the fingerprint sensor would allow the aforementioned plates to be released from the body.

A full look at the entirety of the patent filings can be found here with many pictures to be viewed, along with the patent details here.

There is decidedly a lot that could come from a patent filing such as this, provided something comes period. While the market might be receptive to such a device, the durability and longevity of such a product is a question that remains unanswered. A screen that can be contorted and folded constantly each time it was used would be subject to a substantial amount of wear and tear the likes of which displays today do not have to deal with.

What do you think? Would this product becoming a reality make your year? Do you think Samsung would show off something similar at CES 2018? Let us know in the comments below!
