The OG5 firmware brings the Android 5.1.1 update to the Sprint Galaxy Note 4 while also being a fixer for Stagefright vulnerability on Android, a critical bug. Thankfully, root access is also available now, so in case you were against the OTA till now because of lack of root access, then you sure can take the OTA, or install stock OG5 firmware, to upgrade the device to latest from software update from Sprint and Samsung.
But know this root solution would trip the KNOX counter of your Sprint Note 4, meaning the warranty of your device will be void. Credit for the root kernel goes to recognized developer freeza, thanks a lot!

Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files. Sometimes, Odin installation may delete everything on your device!
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1. If you are on OG5 firmware, skip this step. But if you aren’t, then you need to install OG5 baseband for this. Download the baseband and Odin from above, and then flash the OG5 baseband on your Sprint Note 4 using this guide. Once you have baseband ending with OG5 in Settings > About device screen, you can process to next step. Root will work, it doesn’t matter whether you are on 5.0 or 5.1, or OG5 firmware or not. you only need OG5 baseband.
Step 2. Make sure you have Sprint Note 4 TWRP recovery installed.
Step 3. Boot Galaxy Note 4 into recovery mode:
- Power off your Note 4. Wait 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
- Press and hold the three buttons Power + Home + Volume up together until you see warning screen.
- Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
Step 4. [Optional] Create a backup. Tap on backup, and then select partitions of your choice, preferably all of them, and then do the Swipe action at bottom to start backing up the whole phone! It would always come very handy in case anything bad happens to phone. Go back to TWRP’s main screen by tapping on Home button at bottom left corner.
Step 5. On main screen of TWRP, tap on Install, and then browse and select the SuperSU file. On next screen, just do the Swipe action at the bottom to root your device.
Step 9. Tap on Reboot System to restart the device.
That’s it. Enjoy your Sprint Galaxy Note 4 with root access now installed,, whether you are on Android 5.1.1 OG5 firmware or any other previous firmware.
→ Btw, you can also update to OG5 firmware while keeping the old bootloader from pre-OG5 firmware(s). Check out this thread for the OG5 ROMs, odexed and dexodexed.
