The Moto X Play which Motorola announced about a month ago and has since reached very few parts of the world, already has a working TWRP recovery build for itself, developed by vache over at xda.

The recovery version stands at the latest from TeamWin — 2.8.7.0. However (as of now), it’s an unofficial TWRP build for the Moto X Play, but it shouldn’t take long before TeamWin adds the recovery by vache to official repository as it’s reported to be working flawlessly.

Like most of recent Motorola devices, the Moto X Play too is bootloader unlockable, and thus easier for users to install a custom recovery like TWRP on the device.

And with a custom recovery installed, you can easily flash the SuperSU zip by Chainfire to get root access on any Android device.

Now let’s get your Moto X Play rooted..

Step 1: Unlock the bootloader

As said earlier, you need to unlock the bootloader on your Moto X Play first to install TWRP recovery and then flash the SuperSU zip to get root access. Below is a step-by-step guide to unlock bootloader on Motorola devices.
