As you know by now, Galaxy S has received a pretty impressive custom ROM, bringing with it the coveted Android 4.0 – known as Ice Cream Sandwich, or ICS if you prefer. Those who’ve installed it — we’ve done that, and you can too on your Galaxy S i9000/i9000b by following this guide, and we are already very much impressed by the developer team’s work.

In fact, I love it so much that I’m using it in daily life — even though some much required features isn’t working (it’s my 2nd phone anyway) — but you know, one can’t survive without root after using it even one time. So, I just rooted it and thought it would be a  nice share with you guys.

So, here’s how you can root you Android 4.0 donning Galaxy S i9000/i9000b. Download a zip file — Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip (size – 608KB) — and flash it using recovery. Upon reboot, you’ll have the superuser app installed on your device, and root access gained. Btw, since you can’t mount USB storage to transfer file from PC to phone while phone is ON for now on galaxy S running ICS, so either download the zip file directly on your Galaxy S or transfer it using ‘Mount USB’ under ‘mounts and storage’ in recovery.

Simple and nice, thanks to excellent dev team over at XDA. Credits to manager77 for this.

    Hey Kapil,

I have tried this rom (with ICS). But the super user application not starting up. Also ‘mybackup’ app says phone hasnt rooted. Any clue?

By the way, You are the king of up-to-date articles 🙂

Go to ICS rom’s page and download the root file from the link in step 3 from where you downloaded the rom and kernel too. Then, flash the root file from recovery. That would be it.

Superuser doesn’t work !! force close always !!

These steps fixed it for me:
      1) Download the root fix: http://goo-inside.me/superuser/Super…ghi-signed.zip direct from ‘xdadevelopers’ (as Kapil said in his ICS article).
      2) Transfer the file from your PC to phone through boot menu (or after Android booted up). I recommend this, because it didnt worked first time when I downloaded the link directly to phone.
      3) Now flash it through boot menu.

Hope these steps will work for you too
