Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL exclusive Pixel Launcher has crossed the 1 million download mark yesterday. Does this mean Google sold over one million Pixel and Pixel XL handsets?
Well, maybe or maybe not. We say this as the download count doesn’t necessarily translate to the actual number of Pixel devices sold.
According to Google, the number of Play Store downloads is equal to “Total number of unique users who have ever installed this app on one or more of their devices. Only one install is counted per user, regardless of how many different devices they installed it on. Includes users who uninstalled the app later.”

From this, it’s clear that the number of devices sold could be higher or lower than the download count on the Play Store. That said, it’s highly unlikely for the number to be higher. So, our best bet would be lower but somewhere close to a million.
There are multiple reasons so as to why the actual number wouldn’t be higher, in case you are wondering. For instance, resold devices could see multiple downloads since people log in with unique accounts. Or, folks could have tweaked the build.props to fool the Play Store into recognizing the device as a Pixel or Pixel XL, and the like.
