FYI: You cannot remove Google search bar at bottom on Pixel 2 Launcher

Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL ship with an updated Pixel launcher which brings the Google search bar to the bottom (below the fixed icons row). This makes it easier to access the search bar, but (of course) it looks a bit weird sitting there.

Anyway, what’s surprising is that Google hasn’t provided an option to remove search bar at bottom on the Pixel launcher. This was a pretty bold move to put the search bar in the faces of the users by putting at the bottom of the screen, and consistent too throughout the home screen. We were expecting a disable toggle for it inside the Pixel 2 launcher settings, but unfortunately there isn’t one.

Anyway, we’re sure the cool folks over at XDA and other Android communities would take the matter into their hands and remove the search bar with a modified version of the APK. But we really hope Google would release an update for the launcher and remove the search bar at bottom.

For those who haven’t tried the Pixel 2 launcher, get the launcher’s APK file from the link below and install it on your Android device. The launcher is available on Play Store too, but you cannot download it from there without a Pixel phone. So you must download and install from the APK file instead.

  1. Is there any update to this article? My phone just did an update last night and added the Google search bar below my fixed icons and I don’t want it there!!! And of course, there doesn’t seem to be any way to get rid of it. What BULL****!!!!!!

    1. same problem here with my google pixel 1 update last night, Its so weird 🙁 stupid google search bar..

  2. Wow. I liked the pure android interface, but now I’m going back to a third party launcher. At first, making interfaces ‘better’ was code for obfuscating features so as not to confuse the 90- IQ crowd. But now it’s that and making it more ugly. I need three arms so I can triple facepalm this move.

  3. Same. Update to my Pixel 1 and search bar appears. Can I backtrack to the previous update without losing data? Also, new update is a huge memory hog. NOT happy.

    1. Completely agree. just updated my Pixel 1 – and headed straight to find threads and solutions to removing this UX/UI flaw! Sucks

  4. Where can we complain about the sucky search bar at the bottom? what were they thinking?
