What to know

  • OpenAI is reportedly looking to develop its very own web browser.
  • The AI company is also in talks with multiple companies for additional AI powered search features and has floated a few prototypes for the same.
  • The report also mentions that OpenAI is currently nowhere close to launching the browser.

After taking on Google search with its AI-powered ChatGPT Search, it appears that OpenAI is considering making its own web browser as well. First reported by The Information, OpenAI is also looking to power search features for travel, food, real estate and retail websites and has spoken to several companies the likes of which include Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline. According to the news outlet, some people who have already seen the designs and prototypes for this work.

OpenAI's partnerships with Microsoft and then Apple are well known. But it's Google's search engine and browser monopoly that OpenAI would really be after. The launch of ChatGPT Search has already brought OpenAI in direct competition with Google, while the latter has built its own AI chatbots and injected AI into Chrome and Google search to stay ahead of the game. But it's also come at the cost of rushed releases, debacles, and undercooked features.

If OpenAI does manage to build its own browser, it would be a big blow to not only Google but also the rest of the companies in the browser market. Still, the report mentioned that OpenAI is nowhere close to actually getting the browser up and running anytime soon. So right now is about the perfect time for other browsers to pull their socks up and drive home their existing advantage.
