We all know the OnePlus 6T is coming in a few weeks and it’s going to have an in-display fingerprint scanner. Well before the official announcement, OnePlus has taken the time to share some additional details about technology powering the new “Screen Unlock” feature.

According to OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau, the company has been trying to develop this feature for a long time. Actually, they wanted to implement the in-display fingerprint sensor since the OnePlus 5T, but issues kept popping up and after numerous test, the company decided the technology wasn’t ready for primetime yet.

OnePlus notes their upcoming flagship will use an optical fingerprint sensor for Screen Unlock and not an ultrasonic one. Further, the company explains a bit how the technology works. The screen is used as a light source in order to enhance the outline of the fingerprint and provide an accurate reading of its exact shape and dimensions.
