After launching the phone back in February with Marshmallow 6.0.1, the Nextbit Robin is seeing an update to Nougat in the form of a closed beta test. If you own the device and are interested in finding out what Nougat feels like, head over to the Nextbit community page to register for the program.
The program was announced back in summer, but now Nextbit has released its first software update as beta based on Android Nougat for the Robin. The screenshots you see above are exactly that.
The interesting part about the beta test is that it was made possible with the help of the Paranoid Android team. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Paranoid Android, it is a custom ROM similar to Cyanogenmod 14, now defunct, but very well known for amazing set of features it was first to bring to Android, including the double tap on Recents button to quickly jump into previous app — one of the highlight features in Nougat, mind it. So we might see some new and extra functionality in the Nougat update.
The Nextbit Robin is one of those unique smartphones that tries to be different. It does so by using the company’s own cloud (about 100 GB) to backup unused apps, to be restored on the fly when called for, leading to “storage” of virtually unlimited apps on your phone.
To put it simply, it is the same process of deleting old apps and downloading new apps, but the Robin does this on its own by learning what apps are used frequently. The only drawback is that you’ll need fast internet and large data caps. This drawback most certainly shows up in countries like India. The Nextbit Robin started out a year back, originally as a crowd funded Kickstarter campaign and after raising more than $1 million, and it is now a commercial success.
The Official OTA rollout for Nougat for Nextbit Robin is expected to be coming in Q1 of 2017.
