Those who have been complaining about Motorola’s bootloader-locked releases — here’s something that’ll brighten up your day, and the months to come. Motorola just announced on their community blog, a new ‘developer-edition‘ variant of the Motorola Razr, which will be making it’s way to the European markets in the next few months.
What makes this version special, is that it will ship with an unlocked bootloader!! ; which gives developers that much sought-after flexibility when it comes to developing apps. Not to mention custom ROMs and other performance enhancing tweaks. This is a variant of the Motorola Razr, and not the Razr Maxx though, and will be called the Motorola Razr Developer Edition. Is this Moto’s answer to Google’s Nexus lineup?
What’s also interesting is that Moto also announced, that a US version would also be made available in the coming months, which is definitely a sign that Motorola intends to reduce the gap between geographical releases as low as possible. With the current European version being a GSM device, it is logical to assume that the US version would most probably be an unlocked GSM version too.
What do you think of this move by Moto? Are you happy that they are making a product with an unlocked bootloader available to new users, or are you disappointed that they are not allowing the same freedom to users who have purchased their existing products? Let us know in comments below if you hear anything more on this. We’ll be keeping this one on our buzz radar too!
