A new update is currently being rolled out to Moto X 2nd Gen users, as per Motorola, though the company is totally tight lipped on the build no. and the update size. It seems the update is hitting worldwide, and as for the changelog, it’s all about bring in security patches, up to May 2016.

One would think Motorola would provide up to September 2016 patch level, but that’s not the case. Though, we don’t mind it much, as the device is pretty old now, and the only update that would interest the device is unofficial build of Android 7.0 Nougat, which is already available as CM14, with more AOSP ROMs hoped to arrive later on.

Well, no. The Moto X2 won’t receive the official Nougat update. As you may already be aware that Android devices older than two years usually see the support dropped from OEMs when the update involves an upgrade to Android version, which is why we don’t expect Moto X2 to receive official Nougat update from Motorola.

Sure, the road to upgrade doesn’t end here for the device, as the unofficial update channel is open, and welcomes you too. Let’s see what we mean by this.

Moto X2 Official Nougat update

As said above, with reasons given, that there will be no official Nougat update for the Moto X 2nd Gen. Now, the last Android version update to the device is, and will remain so, Android 6.0.1. No 7.0, and no 7.1 either.

But if you want Android 7.0 badly, and are prepared to trade off warranty of the device, which may have already lapsed, read on below to know how you can grab the update manually.

Moto X2 Nougat update: How can you get it

Well, we expect custom ROMs — user-made firmware, let’s say — to be made available for the Moto X2 based on Android 7.0. Such ROMs already exist, and get you tons of customization and features and theming over stock Motorola firmware, and they will get you to Android 7.0 too.

These ROMs are made using Google’s Android 7.0 build from AOSP, and requires coding knowledge, so you have to wait until a developer comes out with such ROM.

Moto X2 Nougat update: CM14 and AOSP ROMs

CyanogenMod is the most popular AOSP custom ROM out there, and its Android 7.0 Nougat version will be CyanogenMod 14, called CM14 in short.

We expect the AOSP ROMs as well as the CM14 ROM to be available soon for the Moto X2. In fact, an unofficial post of the ROM is already available, which can be reached out via the link given in the download section below.

Moto X2 Nougat update: Download

Right now, only one ROM is available for download, which is an unofficial port — that is, not made by CyanogenMod team — available from a user known as SeannyM.

  • Download Moto X2 CM14
→ Remember, this is for Moto X2 devices with codename Victara only. Don’t try on any other device.

To install, you will need to have TWRP recovery installed. And don’t forget to install the Nougat Gapps after installing the ROM to have Google Apps like Play Store.
