Android 5.1 root for Moto X 2014 at Republic Wireless — model no. XT1084 precisely — has been finally achieved, but this is still only for those who waited patiently for it and Mofo root tool, which allows users to root the device on 5.0 too.
Now, since a Mofo compatible 5.1 update has been made available — thanks to JulesJam! — you can use Mofo again to get root access, along with 5.1 update, on your Moto X 2014.
That is to say, your device must not be on 5.1 update already. Because if you took 5.1 OTA, or flashed the 5.1 firmware yourself, then you have installed the 5.1 bootloader and partition table already on your device, which blocks Mofo root. No way to achieve root access for those who have already updated to Android 5.1.
→ Thus, only if you are on Android 5.0 and have Mofo (can buy it for $20), could you use this Mofo compatible pre-rooted 5.1 update given here for Republic Wireless Moto X 2014. This is exactly the same way things happened for Moto X 2014 5.1 root.
Let’s see the installation procedure.

Backup your Android. Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.
Step-by-step Guide
- boot.img
- fsg.mbn
- logo.bin
- NON-HLOS.bin
- recovery.img
→ These are files you need to flash before flashing the 5.1 update itself. After flashing these, your device will be ready for 5.1 update, with an ability to downgrade back to Android 5.0 if wish so in future.
- Go into the folder containing the files and then left click on empty white space in the folder.
- Now, while holding shift key, right click on empty white space to get a pop-up as shown below.
- Now choose Open command window here option from that.

You will see a command window open up, with location directed to folder where you have 5.1 upgrade images.
- Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds after the screen goes off.
- Press and hold Power and Volume down together for like 5-6 seconds and then release the buttons — you should see bootloader mode, with AP Fastboot Flash Mode written at the top.

fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
We need these files for flashing 5.1 system image.
If need be, download the mofo.zip again, and extract it, and then find these 3 files in windows folder from the extraction. Keep the folder where you have the mofo.exe open.
→ This is the file we will install on your device to update it to 5.1 with root access.
mofo flash XT1094_system_rooted_ext4.img
- Use step 8 to boot into bootloader mode.
- Now, use Volume down button to move selection to Recovery option.
- Then press Volume up button to select it, and boot into recovery mode.
- You’ll reach a black screen with dead Android and an exclamation mark. Hold Power button for 2 seconds and then press Volume up button once. Now, you will reach recovery mode, and will see stock 3e recovery.
→ That’s it. Give your Moto X 2014 ample time to reboot, like 20-40 minutes, and when it does, you shall be running pre-rooted Android 5.1 update on your device, with root access retained. Thank the developer JulesJam for this!
Happy superuser-ing!
