Republic Wireless Moto X 2014 5.1 update with Mofo root [XT1094 only]

Android 5.1 root for Moto X 2014 at Republic Wireless — model no. XT1084 precisely — has been finally achieved, but this is still only for those who waited patiently for it and Mofo root tool, which allows users to root the device on 5.0 too.

Now, since a Mofo compatible 5.1 update has been made available — thanks to JulesJam! — you can use Mofo again to get root access, along with 5.1 update, on your Moto X 2014.

That is to say, your device must not be on 5.1 update already. Because if you took 5.1 OTA, or flashed the 5.1 firmware yourself, then you have installed the 5.1 bootloader and partition table already on your device, which blocks Mofo root. No way to achieve root access for those who have already updated to Android 5.1.

→ Thus, only if you are on Android 5.0 and have Mofo (can buy it for $20), could you use this Mofo compatible pre-rooted 5.1 update given here for Republic Wireless Moto X 2014. This is exactly the same way things happened for Moto X 2014 5.1 root.

Let’s see the installation procedure.

How to Install pre-rooted Android 5.1 update on Republic Wireless Moto X 2014 XT1094

[We need to flash the ‘other files’ first (step 11), before flashing the 5.1 rooted system image file (1.12 GB) using Mofo (step 15), as you will see in the guide below.]

Supported devices

  • MOTO X 2014, model no. XT1094
  • Don’t try the this on any other Motorola device than model no. XT1094!
  • Don’t try this one any other device!

Backup your Android. Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1. Make sure your Moto X 2014 is on Android 5.0, and is rooted with Mofo.

Step 2. Download the two files provided above for your Moto X 2014 on PC.

Step 3. Install ADB drviers.

Step 4. Install Motorola Moto X 2014 drivers.

Step 5. Connect your Moto X 2014 to PC now. You will get a pop-up as shown below on your phone when you connect for the first time after enabling USB debugging. Select ‘Always allow from this computer’ checkbox and then tap on OK button.
Allow USB Debugging

Step 6. Now extract the file named ‘XT1094_5.1_signed_files.zip’ using a free software like 7zip, to get these files:

  • boot.img
  • fsg.mbn
  • logo.bin
  • NON-HLOS.bin
  • recovery.img
→ These are files you need to flash before flashing the 5.1 update itself. After flashing these, your device will be ready for 5.1 update, with an ability to downgrade back to Android 5.0 if wish so in future.

Step 7. Now, open command window in the folder where you have the files from the above step. For this:

  1. Go into the folder containing the files and then left click on empty white space in the folder.
  2. Now, while holding shift key, right click on empty white space to get a pop-up as shown below.
  3. Now choose Open command window here option from that.
    open command windows here
You will see a command window open up, with location directed to folder where you have 5.1 upgrade images.

Step 8. Boot your Moto X 2014 into Fastboot mode:

  • Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds after the screen goes off.
  • Press and hold Power and Volume down together for like 5-6 seconds and then release the buttons — you should see bootloader mode, with AP Fastboot Flash Mode written at the top.

Step 9. Connect your device to PC now.

Step 10. Now let’s test whether fastboot is working alright. In the command window, type the command given below and then hit enter key. (You can also copy paste the commands.) Upon this, you should get a serial no. with FASTBOOT written after it. If you don’t get fastboot written on cmd window, then it means you need to reinstall adb and fastboot drivers, or change restart PC, or use original USB cable.

fastboot devices

Step 11. Flash these files on your Moto X 2014 to prepare the device for pre-rooted Android 5.1 update system image. Use the following commands for that. Hit enter key after running one command, and execute all commands one-by-one.

fastboot flash logo logo.bin
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Step 12. Now, in order to flash the 5.1 system image, we need Mofo files. When you rooted your Moto X 2014 on 5.0 with Mofo, you must have received the mofo.zip upon ordering the tool, extracting which must have got you 3 files (including mofo.exe and mofo_gui.bat).

We need these files for flashing 5.1 system image.

If need be, download the mofo.zip again, and extract it, and then find these 3 files in windows folder from the extraction. Keep the folder where you have the mofo.exe open.

Step 13. Now, extract the file, XT1094_5.1_system_rooted_ext4.zip, to get a .img file (XT1094_system_rooted_ext4.img) from it.
→ This is the file we will install on your device to update it to 5.1 with root access.

Step 14. Transfer the XT1094_system_rooted_ext4.img file to the same folder where you have the mofo.exe and mofo-gui.bat file.

Step 15. Flash the rooted 5.1 system image now. Double Double click on mofo-gui.bat file to run it. This will open up a cmd window. Run this command into the cmd window:

mofo flash XT1094_system_rooted_ext4.img

Step 16. Now reboot your device. If your Moto X 2014 reboot normally, then good, skip to step _ below. Other wise, boot your device using BP Tools. Next step shows how.

Step 17. To restart the device using BP Tools, fir boot your Moto X 2014 into bootloader mode. Use step 8 above for that. Now, using volume down button, move to selection to BP Tools option. Then, use Volume Up button to select it, and you device will reboot all fine this time around. Proceed to next step now.

Step 18. When restart is done, reboot your Moto X 2014 into recovery mode. Do this:

  1. Use step 8 to boot into bootloader mode.
  2. Now, use Volume down button to move selection to Recovery option.
  3. Then press Volume up button to select it, and boot into recovery mode.
  4. You’ll reach a black screen with dead Android and an exclamation mark. Hold Power button for 2 seconds and then press Volume up button once. Now, you will reach recovery mode, and will see stock 3e recovery.

Step 19. In recovery, select ‘wipe cache’ option using power button. Doing this erases cache, which allows 5.1 update to run smoothly. Required only once, btw.

Step 20. When done, reboot your device using the ‘reboot system now’ option.

→ That’s it. Give your Moto X 2014 ample time to reboot, like 20-40 minutes, and when it does, you shall be running pre-rooted Android 5.1 update on your device, with root access retained. Thank the developer JulesJam for this!

Happy superuser-ing!
