What to know

  • Meta launched a standalone AI app on April 29, 2025, powered by its Llama 4 model, available on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.
  • The app leverages user data from Facebook and Instagram to provide personalized responses and includes a social "Discover" feed where users can share their AI interactions.

Meta has officially launched its standalone AI assistant app, bringing its AI technology out of WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger into a dedicated application. The company unveiled the app at its LlamaCon event on Tuesday, positioning it as a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT and other AI assistant apps.

The new Meta AI app distinguishes itself by leveraging the vast amounts of user data the company has collected through its social media platforms. The app can "draw on information you've already chosen to share on Meta products," including your profile and content you engage with, to provide more personalized responses.

You can also provide additional information for the AI to remember in future conversations. For example, telling the AI about dietary restrictions could help it make more appropriate recommendations later. These personalized features are currently available only in the United States and Canada.

A unique feature of Meta's AI app is the Discover feed, which adds a social media element to the AI experience. This feed allows you to share how you're using AI with friends. For instance, you might ask the AI to describe you in three emojis and then share that interaction with your social circle. Your interactions with Meta AI will only appear in this feed if you choose to share them.

The app offers both text and voice interaction options, with the ability to select from various AI voices, including some that mimic celebrities like Dame Judi Dench and John Cena. You can also use the app to generate or edit images through text prompts or voice conversations.

For Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses owners, the new AI app will merge with the Meta View companion app. All paired devices, settings, and media will automatically appear in the Devices tab of the new app. You can start a conversation on your glasses and continue it seamlessly in the app.

Meta has also redesigned its AI website to incorporate the same voice interactions and Discover sharing features found in the app, allowing for a consistent experience across platforms.

The company describes this release as "the first version" and says it's eager to gather user feedback as the product evolves. With this launch, Meta is clearly aiming to differentiate its AI offerings in an increasingly crowded market by emphasizing personalization and social features that leverage its existing strengths.
