The LG Optimus G Pro, LG’s answer to Samsung’s successful and best-selling Galaxy Note 2, has been made official and announced for the US market as an exclusive to carrier AT&T, with a hands-on event for the press scheduled for tonight in New York.
Completely similar to the international Optimus G Pro when it comes to specs, the device has a 5.5″ 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) IPS display, a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor and Adreno 320 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera similar to the Optimus G, and a 2-megapixel camera on the front capable of 108op videos.
There’s also 32GB internal storage and a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Infrared port (acting as a universal remote control) on the connectivity front, and a 3,140 mAh battery. AT&T’s LTE network is supported, and the 5.5-incher runs on Android 4.1.2 with LG’s Optimus UI that adds features such as QSlide, Live Zooming, QuickMemo, QTranslator and more.
This AT&T exclusivity might prove to be a deterrent to LG’s aim to compete with the Galaxy Note 2, which is available on every single carrier in the country and provides a great proposition with its S Pen stylus and matching features, something which the Optimus G Pro lacks. HTC has learned a lesson the hard way by not launching flagships on multiple carriers, and LG would do better to learn from their mistake; not to mention it will also allow more consumers to opt for the Optimus G Pro without having to switch carriers.
The LG Optimus G Pro can be obtained from AT&T on a two-year contract for $199.99, and you can also surrender an old phone to receive $100+ credit. Pre-orders start on May 3, with the release date set for May 10th.
