Last week, surprising details emerged from South Korea claiming that there won’t be an LG G7 this year.
This wasn’t supposed to mean that the LG G6 will not get a successor. However, the report claimed that LG has plans to rebrand the G series into something yet to be confirmed. Of course, this wasn’t an official communication from LG, which gave us all the reasons to take the report with a grain of salt.
Now, according to the official LG UK website, it seems that the G7 is still in the company’s future plans. The website has details of an LG G7 handset that has yet to be unveiled, prompting suggestions that the phone could be unveiled in the coming weeks, probably at the MWC 2018. On the website, LG UK does confirm that the G7 will be the company’s first handset to feature the newer Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging standard, up from QC 3.0 used on the LG G6 and LG G5.
Note that the LG G7 has been confirmed to ship with QC 4.0 and not the enhanced QC 4+ announced last year. This can easily lead to some confusion as far as the processor to be used is concerned. It’s true that the Snapdragon 845 is the one listed with support for QC 4+, however, the fact that the G7 will feature QC 4.0 doesn’t imply that it will be powered by the outgoing Snapdragon 835. Or maybe, just maybe, it does.
We’ve seen companies mixing up things without any issues. For instance, the first handset to use QC 4+, the ZTE Nubia Z17, has a Snapdragon 835 SoC. It gets even better as users of the phone cannot take advantage of the enhanced fast charging technology because the bundled charger only supports QC 3.0. If this can happen, it also means that the LG G7 can have QC 4.0 and a Snapdragon 845 SoC on board.
Still, looking at what LG did with the G6 with respect to the Snapdragon 821 chipset, we cannot rule out anything at the moment, but we are keeping our fingers crossed. Only time will tell!
